It differes all the time for me.
Sometimes I can just leap of the ground. Other times I have to jump off something, etcetera..
So today I had my first lucid dream, but it ended very short. I was jumping through this rocky valley then I said to myself that I was dreaming and that I should try to fly. But I really didn't, I didn't know how so I stop and let the dream control itself. So any tips, on how you can fly?

Congrats on your first lucid!
You don't know how??????? You're just limiting yourself!
You really need to get the concept of "Anything you want to happen can happen." It's not like you have to jump and blink and snap your fingers at the same time. Just think, "Fly!" And maybe jump if you want to, but you probably won't even need to do that.
I just go...
Like the person above me said, its all about believing you can. (Like that corny song they may have made you sing at graduation)
Any doubt about whether or not you can do something will only get in your way in a dream. Its YOUR dream which means YOU make the rules and can do whatever you want. Just remember that.
I like taking a running start and jumping, using my arms as wings. I can fly with my mind, but still prefer using my wings, I find that I have more control that way.
these dreams are very common with me. I've learned that you need to be in very strong sense of reality, thus leading you to know, not think, know you are sleeping. Something in your dream has to give you a hint that this is just not possible to happen around the laws of physics and crap. Most of the people are having situations where the individual jumps/falls from hight and while falling, he feels butterflies in his stomach, getting giant panic breath and just before hitting ground, he wakes up with accelerated heart rate. Its f-e-a-r of dying. It is the thing you have to overcome like it is happening to you in real life, it is the same will you'll have to use. than you are free to do anything. fly.
I used to do the Superman take off to launch me into the sky.
Other times I'd run and leap forward and glide parallel to the ground for bit before soaring higher.

in my first lucid i ddnt think to try flying and in my second i couldent so i found a stool and made it fly and sat on it![]()

I know its a cliche, but JUST DO IT. You wanna fly? jump up and fly.
Estas soñando?
Ceci n'est pas une pipe
I just summon up that zero-g feeling you get from fast curves on roller costers, and my feet d-r-i-f-t off the ground... Oh, and it's not about beleiving you can, but KNOWING you can.
Guess I'm lucky, because in the rather few short lucids that ive had, i have had no problems with flying. There is no effort involved, i just know that i can do it. I don't use any method either, just will myself around.
Mm. although usually I do start in front of a window, and just feel happy that I can fly out of it. I don't make much thought about how to fly, I know that because it is a lucid dream, I can fly and it is wonderful. Last time I lost lucidity because I tried to exit the Earth's atmosphere. Guess my imagination went on overdrive
Although I don't have much duration, usually 10-20 seconds.
Good luck with flying! You CAN do it!
Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience.
It isn't more complicated that that.
It is opening to or recieving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is,
without either clinging to it or rejecting it.

Heh.. The method you are using, is called intent!
After all this time, I am starting to think we can let other people affect our ability to fly. And it seems to have to do with magnetics.![]()

Belief that you can do something in a dream means you can (or can't if you say, believe you can't run).
Don't try to fly, think "I'm going to fly now" and take off in your desired fashion.
when I was trying to learn to fly I would take a running jump off something high, spread my arms and then just glide. I'm actually having the opposite problem now, I fly too fast and loose control.
Everything makes sense once you stop thinking about it
In my first LD, I didn't even doubt I could fly. I didn't think that it couldn't happen, I just said to myself, "Out the window, here I go", and I flew![]()

Third one was really short and unstable
The only time I've had trouble with doing something whilst lucid is when I've doubted myself no matter how little the doubt is. You need to know you can do something without any doubt whatsoever.
Luckily, flying has never been a problem to me. What I do is put one arm forward Superman style, and fly off the ground very fast in the direction of my arm. I don't doubt it I can do it or even think about it, I just do it. Sometimes, I run and jump into the air and then move my arms and legs as if swimming, however this is a bit slower.
Basically, if you know that you can do something, it will happen.

its all about confidence:
in one of my first lucids, i as being chased and stood just above a cliff edge, there was no doubt, i jumped and flew. It was so real, unbelievable.
Later, i jumped out of this window with a doubt that I might fall, and I fell to the ground.
Do it, just do it!
I recently had my first lucid and had trouble flying as well. I couldn't lift off, so I tried diving face-first into the ground, and that got me airborne for a bit. The last thing I decided to do in the lucid was climb to the top of an apartment building that was infront of me and jump off. I knew that was how I could fly. Unfortunately the dream ended before I could start climbing.
