Before you go to bed at night, recall briefly most everything that you did that day. Start at breakfast and go all the way through the day. Especially try to recall anything strange, out of the norm, confusing, or scary. (the toaster was broken for no reason, I almost had a car accident at the mall, someone stole my wallet.....) These are the things that your subconscious will try to "work" on in your dreams so if you remember them before sleep, you have a better chance of recalling your dream in the a.m.
When you awaken and can't recall your dream, try thinking about the emotion that you woke up with....Were you scared, crying, laughing???? This may prompt your short term memory to recall your dream.
