Your last REM period usually lasts less than two hours. If you set an alarm two or two and a half hours earlier than usual and then get up, and do something to wake up a bit before falling back asleep, your morning REM period will be a bit more vivid.
I've had trouble falling asleep before and usually I find that it's because I won't let my mind wander. When you try to control the direction of your thoughts as you try to fall asleep you will usually keep yourself up. If you can get in a habit of going to sleep at a certain time and sleeping for a certain amount of time then the REM periods will become more regular and maybe you can pay closer attention to them.
Also when you wake from a dream make sure you write it down RIGHT THEN. Even if you don't remember the story you can put down feelings and such. Once I wasn't remembering for a while and I just put down two or three words and sometimes a full sentance. After a week of that I was up to a page.
