      What works for me

First off, I'd like to say that I'm the kind of person that really can't (doesn't want to is probably more accurate) wake up in the middle of the night and stay up for an hour to do stuff like WBTB, so I had to find a new way for me to dream.

Lately I have had terrible recall and I think that may have been because I stopped keeping my journal and I haven't been focusing on trying to dream/get lucid when I fall asleep. I personally have terrible recall, so unless I make a concious effort to remember my dreams then I will get nothing.

So here's my method for remembering my dreams and it has worked once to get me lucid in the past:

I usually go to sleep at about 11 after sitting in bed and reading a portion of a book. I sleep until about 5:30 when my alarm goes off. I then get up and hit the snooze button on my alarm so it will go off 10 minutes later. When it goes off again I just turn that one off. If I'm concious enough at this point I try repeating to myself that I am going to start LDing. I have a second alarm set on my computer that will go off at 6:40, when I actually need to wake up (so I have an hour to dream).

It's basically just a WBTB but without the whole staying up for an hour. I get just as much sleep as I normally would, but I take a couple times to wake my mind up before trying to dream so I increase my chances of being aware.

It works for me. I have been remembering the most vivid dreams I've ever had in that last hour (even though I've only become lucid once). It's still in the testing phase so any ideas to improve it would be greatly appreciated. I'm just looking for something I can do without losing much (if any) sleep.

I do this exact same thing. I always set my alarm for 30 minutes before I actually have to get up. This gives me 3 opportunities for LDs, since the snooze is about 9 minutes apart. I actually get less good quality sleep than if I just got up at the first alarm, but this is when I'll get really cool, vivid dreams, too.

My theory is that for the first 6-7 hours before I hear the first alarm, I am in very deep sleep where I don't have many dreams. When I wake myself up a couple times before trying to dream I go right into the higher stages of sleep right away because I have already gotten enough sleep and am more aware.

On a side note, I had my second LD last night doing this. I kinda had some trouble falling back asleep at 5:30 after the first 2 alarms went off but I eventually got there. It was a very short, maybe 20 second long LD, but I was aware that I was dreaming and I tried to spin to keep it so it counts.

Based on what I've read and my own experiences, I'd say that your theory is spot on.

Is it possible that I am just so tired from lack of good sleep that I skip (or don't quite make it to) the REM stages of sleep? It just seems like whenever I wake up in the middle of the night I can't remember anything, no matter how long I've been sleeping.

I'm hoping tonight is another success. However, I feel a little weird setting alarms for Saturday morning...

hey this does sound like a great idea, i mean ive been rejoicefully using the snooze button for almost a year now and i get what youre saying that you do feel more aware of dreaming.
smart plan man and i think i shall use this tonight (gotta get up for church so good test time, probably wont work but never doubt a good plan)
