I'm going to pick up boxing sometime soon, as it was really enjoyable doing when I was a kid (~10 years).

Is or has anyone here been doing it? If so, what can I expect?

      yeah, i used to box.
I boxed friends all the time like everyweekend for years. I was always the best.
At that time i NEVER worked out, i was about 14-15 and all did was play on the PC. About 5'10" 120LBS at the time. Now im 6' 145lbs.
i turned 16 i was so happy i could get my license and join a boxing gym!! whoohoo!
Anyway, a month or two later i was boxing this kid and he hit my bicept as i was throwing a hook and dislocated my shoulder really fast (in and out in a second but it pulled ligements)
This really upset me, all i thought about was boxing for months and i soon realized that even a month or two later i wouldnt be able to so i decided to join a gym (weight lifting, not boxing)
I also hurt my left shoulder at the gym, i doubled my dumbell bench in a month (30Lbs dumbells to 60lbs dumbells) So i think it was prolly from going to fast.
Anyway, to lead to the SHIT, i was warming up today with two 40lbs dumbells (doing chest today) And i got up for my 4th set of 8reps and my arm gaveout, dislocated my shoulder again. It sucks, so bad.
Anyway, thats my bitching i didnt mean to type all of that but yeah, i love boxing, i really wish i could do it.
But now i am lucky if i can even workout my arms in a month.
Go for it man, its one of the best sports besides MMA which i would have done over boxing if i didnt have bad feet (noroma) inflamed nerve.
Its hardwork if u want to be any good.
SO many people arnt motivated at my age though, they will be boxers but they still will go and smoke weed and stuff on the weekends (my age group lol teens)
If your motivated, you can be great.
(unless you have bad joints) -->Now ima go 2 sleep sad after i take like 4 tylenols 2 stop my pain in my shoulder.

Go for wrestling instead. Or a good martial art like jiu-jitsu. Honestly... boxing is just painful and not really effective. When you're on the ground what the hell are you going to do with boxing? If you do wrestling and practice striking on the side you'll be in complete control of defense and offense (plus it's a damn good work out for the entire body).

I'm not just talking out of my ass, either. I've experimented with all three quite a bit.

Boxing is just striking! Why not add some fun into it with submissive holds and what-not. Don't restrict yourself.

Wrestling sounds fun aswell, but I don't know if it would be a good choice if having a light build. I'm 6'0 and have 183 lbs.

I know plenty of lightweights who do wrestling. You have the advantage of speed. You just need to find a group in which you won't be severely disadvantaged, that's all. I'm a girl and although well built most of they guys in my wrestling club have the advantage of 20-40 kilos over me. I still manage.

Also, as suggested, jiu-jitsu works perfectly for lightweights.

In the end it's not primarily about weight. You can be tiny, and if you know your opponents body and weaknesses, you can win in a fight. It's about leverage. As heavy as someone is, if you take out his weight from the knees he WILL fall. It dosen't matter whether he's 200 lbs or not.

I got the mental picture that there would mainly be muscular guys at 220lbs+, immovable to me. But since you said lightweights do it aswell, I will probably have a look into it, as it would probably be great fun playing with people of my size.

Thats why i reccommended MMA, if you have ever seen UFC you see quickily that the jiu-jitsu guys tear apart the boxers. This was especially noticable back in the day before basicily any rules and no weight restrictions, when all the fighters were just huge deasle guys with no brains. Then Gracie came into it with jiu-jitsu and beat like 5 guys a night that were twice his size.
      MMA = mixed martial arts
      incorperates boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu.

Plus if you join competitions, theres weight classes.

Until a Judo professional visited and just took him out.

(Sorry, kind of partial.) I'd be interested to do a comparison between Judo, Brazilian Ju-jitsu, and Sambo.

Jeet Kun Do and Chinese Wushu are two very effective fighting styles also.

If you are just in it for the show, and for something fun to do, then take boxing alone and be done with it. If you are looking to take fighting seriously, then you should probably learn more than one style.
Boxing (and/or kickboxing) is a good base. It's a place to learn how to strike. Given ideal situations, you'll have some good, solid attacks in your repertoire. So if you are just looking for something to "get into," all you'll need is one style, and I see nothing wrong with going into boxing.
If you are in it to learn true fighting prowess, though, start with a striking form (boxing is good) but be prepared to branch out into something a little more comprehensive (ju-jitsu, akido, kung fu). Jeet Kun Do is great, providing you have a good school. Having a background in another style or two under your belt to base the "free-form" of JKD off of is good, also.

Not saying that a Judo master couldn't beat Gracie, but I'd love to see that.

I think it would be Brazilian Ju-jitsu, Sambo, then Judo in order from best to worst :-)
(im my opinion, for MMA fighting)

I took judo for 3 years, i have two first place trophys, i won twice using only one move (its all i knew how to do, i was 8? maybe.)
Anyway, i hated judo my mom made me take it lol, basicly all throwing and stuff, Brazilian Ju-jitsu, Sambo is were all the awsome submissions are. (From what i know of)

-Of couse everyone in the competition got a 1st,2nd, or 3rd place trophy so its not a huge accomplishment :-o

-So like 50 people came in first heh.
