      Burns! please help

Ok I only have couple minutes, will write more after lunch. Yesterday I found 2 abandoned kittens in a soaking wet cardboard box, left out in the rain all day.

Took them home. All the shelters were closed that I know of. Look maybe 2 weeks old or so. Eyes are open, but they still kinda crawl/walk. Didn't know what to do so I bought prematurie baby bottles and put warm milk in them. THey drank alot of it then passed out. I work today and tomorrow so they have to stay on a big blanket in my bathtub. I fed them again at 6am this morning, but I won't get back to them until 5pm to feed them again. Is this ok? I can't take them anywhere until I'm off on THursday. Is there anything more I can/should do for them? Ideas from anyone appreciated.

      THnks,
      Lisa

awww! Poor kittens! I can't believe someone would just leave them to die like that! god I hate people. Except people like you who try to save them!

Anyway, if the kittens are indeed 2 weeks old, they really need to be fed every 4 hours (6 times/day). You can use KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer, you can buy it at pet stores) and make it according to the directions on the package. I am PMing you a Hand-Raising Orphaned Kittens Guide that I wrote for my work.

Honestly, I don't know if they will be ok until you can take them to the shelter. They are probably hypothermic and hypoglycemic, and in either case, they could die very easily. Do you know anyone else that could take them in any sooner?

      I don't know of anyone

But I talked to a lady on the phone from a kitten rescue place and she said they're probably 4 weeks old because they have teeth already. Sound right? God I hope they don't die, because I have to leave them alone for about 10 hours when I'm working. At least when I'm home I'll feed them every 4 hours, even if I have to set my alarm. ANd the lady said the same thing about KMR so I'm gonna find some of that asap.

Thanks for the guide Burns, printing it out now. Oh and the concierge here at work is a cat FREAK. Her nickname is 'Kat'l lol. She practically cried when I told her about the kittens, so she's going to let me put an ad on the bullitin board here at work to help find a home for them. Assuming I don't fall for them. :/ I can't abandon sofie and ziggy ya know? God why do I think I'm about to have 4 cats in my home ksjhkshgkslgd

Not if you think they are 4 weeks old. Kittens start going on their own once they hit 2-3 weeks. It all depends on how old they are. Have you seen any kitten pee/poo since you rescued them?

If they are closer to 4 weeks old, you can leave down dishes of canned kitten food mixed with the KMR. Usually mom cat starts weaning around 5 weeks anyway, so it's not too far off. If only I knew how old they are and I could give you better advice.

Glad to hear they are spunky though - that's a REALLY good sign!

Yeah they are still really lively, must have been older than I thought. One of them is pooing all over the place now, so hopefully the other one will start soon. I haven't been able to get the KMR yet, will do tomorrow. SO I got organic rice milk and some organic baby food that has only organic meat and a little rice and carrots in it here from work. Then I mixed it together in the bottle and they inhaled it. Not as good as the KMR I'm sure, but better than cows milk. Oh, and the poo is all toothpasty like you said, so that's a good sign right?

Anyway, I'll continue to let you know how things go. Thank you again SOOO much for your help. I'll try that advantage stuff for the fleas once I find it. Oh and hopefully post pics soon

damn straight they're lucky!.. tired of cleaning up cat droppings and poopy cat dreadlocks. Just got them a litter box, they started kinda scratching when they're about to pee or poop, so maybe I can start litter training them *crosses fingers*

On the uppity cute side, they love warm baths, and they love the blow dryer even more! I guess they're too young to be scared by it. So adorable watching them roll over and purr as I dry their hair. I'm trying to make them as adoptable as possible by training them and making them accustomed to loud appliances and 4 year old kids. So far so good.. they seem happy so long as they are regularly fed and warm. I just GOTTA get a picture of when they're eating from the little bottle: they freeze and become so focused, as if nothing exists but that bottle. And they go "mnyumnyumnyumnyumnyum" really fast. So adorable.

And yes, they have been named. Chris wanted to call the orange one Henunu (Huh NOO noo), whatever that means. I named the loud calico Gepippe (pronounced Guh PEEP uh) after a cat that I had when I was 3. My dad named it that because it was so loud too, and it means "one who squeals" in his made-up German. I think he was also retarded because he would miss the couch almost everytime he tried to jump on it.

Oh and I got the KMR finally. Damn that shit's expensive. They'd better appreciate it. Like by not pooing on my rug. K back to work now.

uuugh.. why do they eat the kitty litter

I don't want to leave them alone with access to the litter box because of it

Also they haven't pooped since switching them from babyfood and rice milk to the KMR. Is this normal, because they're essentially on an all liquid diet now/ Maybe they're ready for some soft iams kitten food now?

/me checks your kitten guide again...

Yes, you offer them canned kitten food, room temperature or warmed a little. You can mix a little KMR into it as well to make it thinner if they eat it better that way.

Some kittens eat litter for no reason other than to play, but some seem to do it when they're hungry.

Are you sure they're not pooping somewhere else..? Do they seem sick, eating well, etc?

They are pooping again... all over the blanket instead of the litter or the newspaper that I leave for them when I am gone. Even though I put some of the poop on it to kinda give them the hint. Guess they're still too young to get it? Plus I'm not around them enough... i hate that. Starting to have stress dreams over it.

They love iams canned kitten food mixed with KMR, so that's a plus.

It's usually the mother cat who teaches the kittens how to use a litter box. They just don't understand what they are supposed to do. It's hard when you're not around a lot to be able to work with them. Any word yet on someone to take and foster them?

They are BOTH pooing and peeing in the litter box. I'm not putting actual litter in there though, because they like to eat it, so it's just bits of newspaper. But hey, it's all good because they are consistantly using it. And getting bigger and fatter every day. But the boy likes to suck on the girl's toe so that there's no hair on it, and SHE likes to suck on his junk =/. Any tips on how to get her to stop doing that Burns? Don't think I can put polish remover on his wee nuggins ya know.

The guide I sent you addresses this:

If you are fostering more than one kitten at a time, the littermates may start suckling on the other kittens’ genitals. This tends to alarm people if they’ve never experienced it before, but it’s actually common behavior seen in young kittens. It’s important that it is not allowed to continue – the genitals of the kittens being suckled on may become damaged, or the kittens doing the suckling may ingest urine or feces and become very ill. Never separate the kittens – they need the continued closeness and warmth of their siblings. Instead, try giving them something else to suckle (like a balled-up piece of cloth dipped in warm water and honey, or a small stuffed animal or blanket). The kittens may also be suckling the other kittens because they are hungry, so try feeding more at each meal.

      Hope that helps!
