Could you survive without teh Interwebz for one week?

I was listening to Radio 1 this weekend and they had this discussion going about those people who are addicted to the social networking sites like Facebook, Bebo and Myspace. And this particular radio DJ says he is forever checking his Facebook profile for messages and stuff and was going to try give up the internet for a week.

Now I thought this was nothing bit at first and would be very easy to do, but then I thought about it, and realised just HOW much I rely on the internet! I mean excluding work, most of my social lie is arranged on the internet, my weekends to go out with friends is all done on email or on Facebook. My birthday night out has been arranged on Facebook too. And then there is this place that for some reason I cannot tear myself away from

So I don't think I could last a week away from the internet, do you?

I do it several times each year, by choice. My travels provide convenient opportunities.

Even near the Amish community there is now a hotspot, so that's no longer a complete refuge from technology - unless I leave my laptop at home... which I do.

Sure I miss my friends when we're out of touch, but it's not the end of anything. "Absence makes the heart grow fonder," you know.

As a matter of fact I was forced to go without it for a week when my family took me on a walking holiday in the Lake District. We were staying in youth hostels, so I had no internet. It was pretty rough, but I made it... was pretty relieved to be back though

So yea, I could survive without the internet.

I've survived 4 weeks without internet. Damn it was painfull, not gonna do that ever again. It was like being isolated from the entire world, since you don't get the news you want, but just the news that are on TV, and in the newspaper.

However, I think I could survive forever without internet. I certainly won't enjoy it, and it will take time, before I will stop thinking about it, but I'm good at adapting. Everybody is, but some just whine.

Sure I could. There's not a whole lot I do on Myspace. I get a message from someone I actually want to read maybe once a week on there anyway. Even less often for email. It's usually pointless stuff I do on here. Photoshop Phriday only updates every Friday (duh). Boners.com updates less often than that. Askaninja.com updates around a week or so. I most often use the internet for Googling things. My hard drives are full, so I can't download anymore anime at the moment. So, sure I could survive for a week.

Yeah, I've done it loads of times. I avoid going on Bebo *shudder* if I can as it's so terrible, but it's a necessity seeing as all my friends use it.

Back to the question though, at the end of last term there were two CCF (Combined Cadet Force) camps. It's basically a kind of watered-down army training. We learn how to march (Parade drill), patrols, sentry duties, basic survival behind enemy lines, setting up camp, camouflage and Basic rifle drill with some god-awful GP rifles that have a stoppage every 5 minutes. I don't know why we dont train with kalashnikovs (sp?), they're near indestructable! These camps last a week and there definitely isn't interwebs there. The evening's do get kind of boring I must admit. During the day you're so active you don't have time to think about the internet.

Quite easily, my only objection would be that right now my music collection is away from me, so I'm relying on internet radio until I can go home and get it. Apart from that I'd do fine.

Yeah I don't use like Bebo or Myspace, just Facebook as it is SO easy to keep in touch with all my friends at once where normally I wouldn't have time or the resources to keep in contact with them.

When I went on holiday with my parents this year I didn't have the internet for the 10 days I was there, although I did use mobile email so I guess that doesn't count.

Bebo is like facebook, just tasteless and over complicated.

Although I think that facebook is becoming more complicated with all these damn add-ons that everyone's got now... I just can't be bothered to get any score on Pac man to show everyone...meh.

Goldney, you do CCF at your school as well? We do it at ours, but I'm doing VSU (volountary service) instead. Lol when the CCF people came back from their late night camping trip half of them hadn't managed to get their facepaint off the next day in school.

I've survived without the internet several times, mainly when I go traveling. (which happens often) Most of my stuff is set through my phone so no big deal. Although when I get back on the net I have sooo much to catch up with, so many people to answer, etc. Anyway its nice to take a break and change the lifestyle a bit every now and then.

I could definitely survive without internet for a week, but I would be constantly thinking about it. My hubby would have a harder time than me, probably. If it were for much longer than a week, I might start having withdrawl symptoms though

Oh, piece of cake. I almost had a heart attack at the beginning of my month long trip to Russia, but I learned to actually LOVE not having the internet around (not to mention my phone). There's a certain piece of mind that that gives you. I read more books during that month than I did in an entire year, and it felt great.

Okay okay, so I did get a chance every few days to go to this internet lounge place and check my email. But still.

I often go without any electronics for long periods of time. Next time will be a hunting trip in a few weeks. Nothing but wood to heat and a hole to shit in for a few days...

Yup, I could do it. Been forced to go from using the interwebz constantly to not using it nearly at all for three months and a full month on two different occasions due to circumstances out of my control.

Would I like it or want to at this point in my life? Not at all.

I probably couldn't live without the internet. Well, I could, but it would be excruciatingly painful
I have an internet business going on, so a week away from that would be bad. Plus computers are my hobby, and I communicate with all my friends on it.

And I'd be away from DV for an entire week

I have survived without real social interaction for over a decade; I certainly can go without the internet for as long as need be.

Done it many times. It feels weird for the first day or two, then you're fine for as long as you want to go without.

Yeah, all the new people (myself included) lather on way too much camo paint. You don't need a lot honestly. I remember last camp there were a load of Canadian students there (they were really cool) and and the amount they put on was astonishing. I swear on some of them it must have been almost an inch thick*.

By the way the trick to getting it off: baby wipes. Works like a charm.

*Okay maybe that was a slight exaggeration.
