Digital Camera

Okay, I'm in need for a new digital camera. I used to have a Canon Powershot SD450 - which worked fine for me. Someone broke and is willing to pay for a new one.

I can get the SD450 again, but I'm thinking about a slight upgrade. (Without paying much over the SD450's price. ) I'm kind of stuck on Canon, but am open to suggestions. As I said before, the SD450 worked fine for me, so I'm not really looking for a big, expensive camera. Something around that range, if you know what I mean.

I'm looking into SD750 and SD1000, but can't really decide. I'm hoping you guys can give me some advice.

Holy crap! Teach me your ways! I can't for the life of me figure out how to use that site. Do you have to be a retailer or something? Maybe I'm just having one of my dumb moments, but I checked it out the last time you posted it... PM me, will you? Because I too am in the market for a DSLR. I was going to get the Nikon D40, since that's my budget, but...

Xox, I have the Canon Powershot A560, and would definitely recommend it.

stick with canon. anyone who suggests otherwise is a communist.

if you go with an slr remember that you need to buy lenses. but it's worth it.

I doubt she can afford a DSLR, or has the interest in learning how to use one...

But if you do get a DSLR, get a Nikon.

Yeah, I'd love to learn, really. But I don't exactly have the time + money.

I just need a replacement, perhaps a better one, to my SD450.

And about that alibaba, don't you have to buy like a bunch of them, at least? I don't think you can just purchase one.

Speaking of Digital Cameras, what do you think of this? I want a small camera that can fit in my pocket, and this one sounds really good.. I mean, 8mp, 5x zoom, very attractive design... All I want a camera for is vacation, and quick shots.

Nah you don't have to buy in bulk. Just find the right seller. And make sure they send you the manual in english and not chinese or something. Also, most of the SLRs I've asked about on alibaba include the lens.

If I find a good source, and purchase one, I'll post a link for you MoS. At the moment, I'm still discussing my options with a few different sellers.

Have you ever actually purchased anything from alibaba.com?

Just a warning: there are a ton of scammers on alibaba. I checked it out and they were selling ipod touches 32GB for >100 dollars. Anything that cheap is just a scam...

Yep. And I've never been scammed. Just don't be an idiot about it.

That's good. But how do you prevent scammers anyways? When I see someone selling 100 dollar ipod touches, it seems a little shady. Who do you buy from and what type of stuff do you buy? Anyone in particular you know you can trust?

I'd appreciate it, Nina! Though I'm not terribly sure I want a gray market camera...

I may just stick with buying the D40 from Adorama.

I'm a bit paranoid too, oh well, I'll just leave it to my brother to buy it for me.

Well, alibaba obviously is not only scammers, as otherwise it would not be running with such popularity. But you have to be pretty good I assume to be able to spot the scammers. And regardless of anything else, if someone offers ipods for 20-50% of the original price, that's a scam right there. They do have discounted prices because, I am assuming, the companies buy tens of thousands of pieces from apple at prices 20-30 dollars off for each unit and then pass resell. I mean, just think of it in this sense: any "company" that is selling tons of ipods probably has some intelligence, right... well, from a purely economic point of view, there is no point selling ipods for like 20-50% when they can easily and consistently be auctioned off for 90-95% of the original price on ebay.

The way I like to spot scammers is to pretend that you are an affluent business man, then ask them where they are based and tell them that you happen to be flying there for a business meeting soon and want to talk with that person to purchase their product. Like, just tell them you do not feel safe doing an initial trade over the internet and you want to test the quality before purchasing as well as be there in person to feel more secure about the transaction. If they say you can do that (which they probably will at first) follow up and get pretty specific about it all. I did that once and the guy said "I have to go to bed now, talk to you later."
