Reply With QuoteNormally I'd chalk this up to paranoia, but if anyone would attempt this sort of monkey-business, it would be Bush/Cheney. So yes, I'm a little scared. Just watch out if some sort of emergency situation starts building in the next nine months. Like, say, with Iran.

President Bush, without so much as issuing a press statement, on May 9 signed a directive that granted near dictatorial powers to the office of the president in the event of a national emergency declared by the president.
The "National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive," with the dual designation of NSPD-51, as a National Security Presidential Directive, and HSPD-20, as a Homeland Security Presidential Directive, establishes under the office of president a new National Continuity Coordinator.
That job, as the document describes, is to make plans for "National Essential Functions" of all federal, state, local, territorial, and tribal governments, as well as private sector organizations to continue functioning under the president's directives in the event of a national emergency.
The directive loosely defines "catastrophic emergency" as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions."

so technically, the president can now declare a state of emergency like Musharraf did, and have total Dictatorial power of the united states...
That means all federal state local and even tribal governments under the control of ONE MAN, King George, and to top it off, he will control the private sector also with this state of emergency...
is it me, or does this scare anyone else to death?
so say john mccain loses, the republicans lose the white house, I have a terrible feeling this emergency power will be used.

It doesn't seem to me like the American people would just sit still and let it happen, he's only one man, surely we can just get red of him if we don't like him, it would take him longer then that, inless he uses some kind of threat that you cannot critizise him.

Lets see, the american people sat by, while he went to war illegally in iraq, lied to us all, and refuses to listen to withdraw, if the people sit around for that, im sure they are going to sit around when this state of emergency gets declared.
