*sighs* and yet most people don't seem to give a damn. even though we are permanently destroying lifeforms we have not even discovered...
yesterday i spent the day in a bird sanctuary. i tried to classify all the different birds by their calls/visual characteristics. i couldn't, but it only made me realize how many types there were..i saw great blue herons (which are often over one meter tall), and saw two baldheaded eagles through binoculars from only twenty feet away. absolutely amazing...
it got me thinking of how few species there were in that sanctuary, teeming with life as it was, compared to the rainforests, where most of the world's species reside.
and the fact that humanity is basically taking a 'lawn mower' to thousands upon thousands of plant and animal species constantly. for such things as lumber and cheap beef of all things![]()

Only to the white man was nature a wilderness and only to him was the land 'infested' with 'wild' animals and 'savage' people. To us it was tame, Earthe was bountiful and we were surrounded with the belssings of the Great Mystery." - Chief Luther Standing Bear of the Oglala Sioux
This we know. The Earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the Earth. This we know. All things are connected like blood which unites one family. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons of the Earth. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself." - Chief Seattle, His address, 1853

Ah well, sucks. But what does it really matters, a million year after we all died everything is about back to normal.

Yeah, it does really suck but what are we to do if we disagree? Humanity is in a state now where as a whole, or at least those that seemingly matter the most, care more for plasma screen TV's and the newest SUV model with TV display installed with glossy rims than what damage that greed may cause. Even after you explain this to people, most people wouldn't even lose a wink of sleep just showing how crass and uncaring most people really are.
If you ask me, humanity is really just digging its own grave with it's insipid greedy nature, therefore humanity as a whole deserves what will most likely be coming in the near future...
I think what I will do is do this as the reading part in my english conversation classes, along with those cool quotes![]()

My birthday is on Earth day, April 22. I'm one of the biggest nature buffs you'll find and reading that just disgusts me. I cant say I'm any better of a person though, I do my fair share of damage to the enviornment too. Personally I dont think its possible to stop what's happening to the world. We're on one hell of a crash course!
it's absolutely possible to stop, it's just that no one seems to give a shit. i'm hoping that the supply of oil runs out very soon. otherwise there's gonna have to be some extreme ELF action.Originally posted by will.i.am

who gives a shit if the FBI labels them terrorists? a terrorist is one who uses violence/terror as a means towards a political objective.
if one knew the first thing about the 'elves', they would know a fundamental consideration in all their actions is that no animal life (human or otherwise) is to be harmed.
hmm..*weighs the two options in his hands*
a group of corporate machinations raping our only earth, killing and harming countless humans/animals/plant species in myriad ways.....or a group of people trying to destroy the means by which the first group inflicts their widespread assault on the natural world.
yeah, that's right....the second group are obviously the terrorists....they blow up machinesdear god!! those rich f**ks who own the means of production must be terrified that their profit margin will be slightly down!
i'm not saying i really support the ELF. however, this is simply because it isn't efficient enough. currently the profiteers simply replace the damaged property (harming the earth even more in their neccessary extraction of the components required to create replacements, and thus speeding up the rate of their harmful actitivities).
now, if we could somehow destroy the majority of property responsible for, say, clearcutting the rainforests (along with factories which produce replacements), that'd be on to something.
wow, according to the FBI, i support terrorists. oh..wait, i really don't care![]()

PETA does suck cock. I have the Idea it's controlled by really, really stupid people.

hahah thats the stupidest thing ive heard in a while. how do you donate to an organization consisting of autonomous cells that have no capacity to communicate with others, and only exist as an idea. the answer is, its not possible. any group of people who decide to take matters into their own hands in the name of saving the planet are the ELF. you cant donate or fund that.Originally posted by bradybaker

Well if it makes anyone feel better, YellowStone (the famous Super Volcano), is going to erupt soon (its 40,000 years overdue), and when it does, you won't have to worry about PETA or most other people for that matter, as it will seriously screw the earth up...

i find it funny how we can get so up in arms about humans and their progress while we sit here behind our computer screens.
species go extinct everyday. things will find a balance. if that means half of our species gets wiped out by disease... so be it.
-jake
clear eyes. strong hands.
Well.... where would WE be if the dinosaurs were still traipsing about, eating every furry little mammal in sight?
Our biggest worry is that we do not become extinct ourselves.
Besides, it is no easy debate. There are those who would rigidly clamp down on human population growth. But then all the Partisans for Freedom would clamor, whine, and cry about the infringments of their inalienable rights to do whatever they damn well please whatever the results to the entire world.
What is really required, but which has only ever appeared over a great span of time is a Set of Coherent Social Institutions which maintain a long term viable population level. Anthropologists have pointed out certain Tribal Societies that developed certain traditional institutions that have worked extremely well in maintaining a zero growth equilibrium. And since it is all quite 'traditional' it all fits in with what they 'freely' choose.
The West, under Catholic Civilization was well on its way to a Population Equilibrium, with so many people volunteerily choosing to be celebate Monks and Nuns. But the Atheists and Secularists simply insisted upon discrediting and demonizing what really would have been a basis for a sustainable World.
So fuck you all.
hahaha yeah, everything would be just fine if catholicism reigned supreme. what a bummer.
gragl
Well... yeah. Catholic Civilization had actually arrived at a set of institutions widely accepted by the public by which a huge proportion of the population foreswore the desire to procreate. yes, many people today can't imagine such a state of affairs, but that is exactly what is wrong with today -- that popular expectations and institutions are aimed so entirely toward extremely destructive behaviors. It was an amazing accomplishment for Civilization to get so many people to volunteerily refrain from reproducing, and only some modern idiot would be so dismissive of what might possibly been our only hope for a sustainable existence of the human species.Originally posted by mongreloctopus

relying on something like catholicism to prevent over-procreation is foolish, since it alienates the majority of the human population. how about something more far-reaching, like issuing permits for reproduction, and forcibly sterilizing people who are eugenically unfit to pass on their genome.
