Finally, something I know something about! I was around at the birth of the CB craze.

What you want is a 40 channel, 4 watt unit. Anything made in the last 10 years will probably be good. You can go illegal and add a linear amp as well if you are wanting to really get out there. Just don't get caught.

Don't remember forget to purchase a good antenna, it can make all the difference in the world. Some people prefer the base loaded kind, when I was into CB, I ran a quarter wave whip. Good reception and transmission, but kind of rough on drive throughs.

I think radio shack sells some good equipment. I personally recommend Cobra or Midland, they are pretty decent units. Uniden is OK as well. I would stay away from anything like funai or other strange sounding names.

I am guessing you don't need side band capabilities, right? That really jacks up the price.

Yeah, I was really into CB about 30 years ago -- I'm afraid I haven't looked at one anytime recently though. Am I correct that you no longer need a license to operate one?

Used to be 100mw was unlicensed. You had to fill out paperwork to get to 5W and a needed a HAM license for anything over that.

Of course, that never stopped people from buying 5W systems and running them without license. I had several friends that did this as well as a few that had some high power linears, I mean in the 1000W range!

I'm not sure, but I think you can run up to 4W unlicensed now.

i was just looking for something to pick up trucker chatter... and possibly a copper or two.

so far in the past month i've had 3 needs for it. aparently my father has one that he bought for $160 about 8 years ago along side a $200 antenna. i'll hook it all up and see how it runs.

ah so... The Citizens' Band radio (CB) is, in the United States, a system of short distance radio communication between individuals on a selection of 40 channels within the single 27 MHz (11 meter) band.
It says my lucid age is 10 years+ that's true but I still have recall issues
