      Teenagers

Everyone on the internet is teenagers and 20somethings.

Is this just that they're more vocal?

Or is it that they're the only types who really get stuck in to the internet?

If yes to 2, then in 20 years will the general visible internet userbase have aged?

The internet is a very new tool. More likely, the older crowd just hasn't adapted to frequent internet usage. The userbase of the future will most likely be more diverse.

Really, who can say? When we all get older, we may be met with new responsibilities that have no room for the intarwebz. Perhaps the general userbase will stay young...foreeevaaaaar....

      Hope so.

Internet will develop and evolve as new technology emerges. The younger generations adapt faster to this new technology, and so they take over as dominant force on the latest manifestation of the internet.

As the teenagers depart for an ultrarealistic virtual reality internet

they leave the world of google, youtube, forums to the elderly.

I don't think that's necessarily true. I think that the main reason the younger generations have caught on to this new-fangled internet technology is because it has grown so very quickly and because there was really very little comparable technology previously, so it had a steeper learning curve; something that older people maybe couldn't handle or be bothered with.

I personally don't think that there's going to be anything so drastic in the next few stages of the internet evolution, so the old peeps who are used to the internet will be able to keep up easier.

I can't access the database to show anymore but learning curves for the elderly compared to youth but this is the case. Older people simply do not have the same plasticity as the younger. Furthermore, the elderly are still a vast majority of people who have not utilized much technology at all. While it is still possible for many of the them to learn to use the internet (as the graph shows), there's a vast majority that are simply not used to it.

In 20 years, these statistics will likely be significantly different with the abundance of our generation that are used to internet usage.

Wouldn't it be funny if young people in the future refused to use the internet because it was so uncool and only for old people.

In my experience, virtually every person under 25 that I know spends 5 - 6 nights a week on the internet (the other night/s being spent passing out drunk in a gutter somewhere). Everyone I know who is either married or over 30 spends every night watching TV. It's a generational difference...

Whatever happened to people being social and actually doing things??

A look at facebook and myspace photo's will alleviate this concern.

Depending on how you use it, the internet is a social medium.

Facebook is considered socialising these days??? I suppose chatting with a girl on IRC is considered going on a date now too? Visiting a travel website is going on a holiday? Crikey, if you're lucky enough to actually have friends, at least make proper use of them. Some of us don't have friends at all*.

I guess one's work situation also plays a role - few teenagers are going to be working full time. Now that I work full time I don't even have the internet at home because between making dinner, ironing my shirts, cleaning up and doing all the other mundane stuff that a boring fart with a soul-destroying white collar job has to do, there just isn't time.

      * Uh, I mean some pathetic, lonely hermits in isolated, remote locations. Apparently. Not that I'd know. (Phew, that was a good one.)

I think one driving factor is that there are still plenty of people alive who were around long before their were computers at all, let alone a vast world wide network. Technology is changing much more fluidly these days, so that in 30 years there will still be at least minor vestiges of the technology from today, and it will have been much easier to change and adapt right along with the flow of technological advance.

The ability to happily respond to any adversity is the divine.

Communicating with other humans is socializing. Though it doesn't happen often, some people do like to go for internet relationships. It's weird, but I've seen it. Playing video games on the internet with your friends and chatting over a mic can be considered socializing also. The internet is a very social place.

I really don't have any friends at all. I used to have a bunch of friends, but things took a turn in my life quick. I've been met with the opportunity of being in certain groups, but these are the types I really don't want to get entangled with. Being as independent as I am, I don't need much social contact, but the internet has fulfilled that small role and kept me from going mad all this time.

What about someone who spends all of every night writing letters to people, but never goes out? That's communicating with people, but I think we'd all agree it's a little on the antisocial side. It's no different from people who lock themselves in their room every night and use the internet. Crikey, if you've got friends, why on Earth would you want to talk to them on a screen instead of face-to-face? Get a life people! And you know if I'm telling you that, you definitely have problems!

By the way, I don't have any friends either Black Eagle, but using the internet as a crutch is just an excuse to not have to bother getting out and meeting people.

I definitely agree. I'd much rather be out and about socializing with people than sitting here typing at the computer talking to people whom I've never met and probably won't ever meet. Thing is, I'm just trying to find the right people. Last semester I hung out with some pretty bad kids. At first I tried my best to get to know them and be friends with them, and I did so. I quickly realized that this was not my crowd, however, and was forced to phase them out of my life. Read my help thread to get a vague idea of who these types were.

I used to be that antisocial person who sealed himself off inside his room, but I'm slowly changing from that. I think it was just sort of a growing-up phase. Some people rebelled, I chose solitude. 2 more years of highschool. I've got a lot of character-building to do. One thing I can say I've benefited from it is that I'm independent and I've matured a lot faster than everyone else.

Nonetheless, I'll always love online video game mic chat.

Ah well, I have the same problem. It's difficult to find people who are sensible whom one can actually have a decent conversation with. I wish you the best of lucque.

The internet, as a subjective object, is a living breathing collection of variations of falsities and truthfulness. It's up to the subject themselves to move forward through the progressions of evolution, to find themselves through a process of awareness and interpretations.

The internet as it stands, it just another brick in the wall. History is being made, and will not end as part of the life we call "the internet". Predictions of the future can only be assumed, and during those assumptions you're preparing the path for said assumption to take place.

The internet will live on as long as a connection is made and accepted. Remember, history never dies it just becomes a part of the future.
