There should really be a dreamviews IRC channel, I know, its been suggested before and never really caught on, but I recommend givin it a shot and using some existing IRC network to get people on. Its nice to be able to talk real-time, and IRC is easilly moderated should the need arise.
Just a suggestion.

Let me make it obvious to everybody that the chatbox (yes, that is not it's name now, it's too long for me to remember now) is the official Dreamviews chatroom, if you like.Originally posted by Techboy

If you log onto IRC #dvchat, and somebody calls you a shithead, etc, the adminstrators won't really be able to deal with it, because they didn't make the #dvchat channel, and so therefore they shouldn't be laboured with dealing with complaints from it. I personally would really reccomend the chatbox to people, as if that sort of scenario pops up on #dvchat, things could get sticky.
But I think it would be great for an official, moderated #dreamviews channel or something (i chose #dvchat in case that ever happens). You can get java clients so people can get onto IRC, and ld4all uses it with no real problems whatsoever. It's also more stable (obviously, as it's been around for alot longer than icedawg's chatbox thingy has). And it wouldn't suck the bandwidth here, but I don't think that's a problem.
However, last time icedawg didn't want one, and it's probably gonna be the same this time.
there won't be any sanctioned dream views IRC channels, sorry.
the chat here works great and is essentially built-in to the forum. although i don't think i've updated it yet, in the newest version you can also send PMs via the forum and i've got a bunch of other integration ideas as well (like perhaps immediately notifying upon the arrival of a forum PM). it's also easy to identify members because they have the same names, and you can view their profiles, and access to rooms is based on rank, and you can password-protect rooms, etc. etc. for the life of me i cannot see any benefits of IRC over what we have. plus i...you know...hate irc with a passion.![]()
Each new day is a chance to turn it all around.
The chat does work okay but sometimes it buggers up and dosen't display messages anymore unless i say something.
synchronization issues...it happens when you combine different technologies over the Internet that are vulnerable to latency.

yeah, i've noticed.. but seriously, you can moderate IRC really easilly with chanserv. You just need a good network like Freenode (which i hit for linux stuff). DALNet is kinda the craphole of all IRC networks, its really not a good place to have the channel, (ie. netsplits, warez, porn, all that nasty stuff which comes on networks like that). Plus, dalnet has been gettin lots of DDOS attacks, and its been reduced to half the size it originally was.
The web chat is kinda clunky, irc is much more streamlined and there are lots of free open-source clients (irssi, x-chat).
So I know you hate IRC, but its probably because you've never hit a good network. Its up to you though, i'm sure others would like it.

I use irc and the chat feature at the same time, however, this really messes them up. If you want, I could get a chanel running on the phasedisruptor network. This is a little know, yet extreemly reliable one. The moderation issues. One word Nigserve. This was a bot created by AJ, the networks owner, he used it to auto op/admin certain members according to thier status. This has been modded with roomserve and Daisyserve, which do the same job. I could make a dreamserve, if anyone is interested. I really don't mean to bitch if this post comes off this way.

Oh my god, can you work out the puzzle?
DV's already has like, 5 irc channels scattered over various networks thanks to a bunch of striving community members who took initiative, but none of them are active at all.
Besides, we got chatspot.
Which still displays things whenever it feels like it. icedawg shouldn't of given the chatbox laziness abilities, damnit.Originally posted by CT

I'm active on freenode, almost every day. If there would be a decision by seeker or icedawg, and maybe a little server link at the bottom of the main page, I could see it happening.
You'd need a warning saying it isn't sanctioned by us. Oh, and then who would moderate it?
I could, i've moderated irc channels before.. it really isn't a huge issue. If you have a problem with me doing it, I really don't care who does it, if they need to learn the ropes of IRC, thats not to hard either.
Yeah, well, icedawg has said no, so I've lost intrest now.![]()

Why IRC? Some people hate that and it's good to have a place to chat directly on your forum at the bottom. I really think it is a good idea for any forum. Here is a screenshot of mine, however I don't have any members at my forum to use it, but here it could really rock, I guarantee it!
I have used this type of chat system for several online games and it really keeps the group together. The only drawback is that you would need a moderator but just as any forum, you will always find those who seem to never sleep ad are on it when you wake up and on it when you goto sleep.
What are peoples thoughts on this. It is real time but the non premmie version doesn't auto refresh so people who are chatting need to click the little red refresh button on the bottom right to update the conversation.
And while we are on the topic of forum improvements my other game forum also has this:
A music player. It can hold tons of songs and it can be set to start playing them as soon as someone views the forum OR set to play only if they hit play. I want to add one to my forum with sounds of waves, beaches, waterfalls, rain, thunder, lightning, forests, jungles etc....but something else that is pretty cool would be having it play all songs dream related or with the words dream in it. How 'bout adding "Enter Sandman"? Maybe "Dreamer" by Supertramp? You get the idea. That's cool too. And of course there would be a members suggestion thread for songs.
Anyhow, maybe I am just talking to myself right now and no one cares but I say the more improvements a forum has the better.

Ya I know, I'm quite the digger uh? I love snooping old threads. Anyhow after seeing the chat here I must admit it is very nice. But the music still seems a new idea. The only one drawback to a music player is that you have to open each new thread in a new tab or else the player refreshes and starts again. I got used to it however on my game forum and all the members seem to like it and have even suggested most of the songs on it.
Anyhow, it was just a thought. Everyone loves music to.![]()
