I think 'astral plane' is just an umbrella term for places and existances we can't logically explain. Other realities that we've lived, perhaps? Or are currently living simultaneous harmony (or disharmony as the case may be) with this one. I've had a few sessions in the astral plane and I can say that you don't need to be asleep to reach it.
The first person who took me under his wing and taught me 'magic' also taught me his method of astral projection, which involved the use of a mirror and a certain kind of incense. This differs greatly from the experiences of others, but that's what he taught me and that's all I knew back then. Traveling in that way was strange, to say the least, and I never did get used to it. I could look at myself and see nothing, which is very disconcerting. Also, I always felt a connection to my body. It was a thin thread of shimmering light that acted as sort of a bungee chord. If I strayed too far, or got too lost, it would snap me back into myself. Thing is, I couldn't see the chord, only feel it.
I was very dangerously curious back then, and I would often venture out on my own, without my teacher's protection. Looking back on it now, I doubt he was protecting me anyway... but that's another story in and of itself. There was one night when I used the mirror method, as I had been taught, but something was off. My reflection was melting. I can't describe it any better than that. Something pushed me, hard, and I flew backwards and hit the wall. I don't know how long I was there, but when I woke up I was scared shitless. I've never done it like that since.
I'm not sure I've ever told anyone that before. I'm not sure why I just typed it now. I guess it was just time for it to come out. Anyway, sorry I digress. That's my experience with this astral plane stuff, though. Projecting in dream is a bit different, but I think that can be considered an astral plane as well. Like I said, I think it's an umbrella term that encompasses a lot of different things.

The Astral plain is God (everything) and god rests seemingly still in an infinite nothing.
yes, you can meet ppl there, but you should humble yourself a bit and learn some more before you go there. Infinity is a big place.
Gawd lost soul, careful!!!!
The thing is, sorcerers are still very real, and they can 'see' you there and some of them aren't so nice. It takes incredible neutrality to travel undetected. Practicing certain high focus astral projection can result in death. Things exist there that the human brain does not percieve. When they are 'seen' (I put it in quotation because the seeing I'm talkin 'bout is 3rd eye style) by us, sometimes they can wreck minds, warp perceptions, even kill those who resist or try to 'define' them in their normal human terms of perception.
But death is just as likely in reali life so I say risk it and keep your mind open and fear nothing, sorcerers and other spiritual deities can sense your fear...you don't want that.

I'm much more careful now, Blu (do you mind if I call you that?). Like I said, I had a ... teacher ... who taught me all the wrong things when it came to magic and astral travel and dreamwalking (he even taught me the wrong uses for runes... talk about dangerous...). I followed him so blindly. Never again. I don't follow anyone except my goddess.
Apologies for the religious reference there! Please don't jump all over me! I love you all! *hides*

My dad thought he might be connected to the astral planes. Something about a dream where he was falling upwards, and as he got into the upper atmosphere it was hard to breathe; as if he were actually there. He always woke up before it got impossible to breathe (and he was shortof breath). He never did anything about it, being one of the most religious people I know (Catholic). The way he described the astral planes was they were dimensions that coexisted with ours but were different, and you couldn't sense them normally. They are a dangerous place from all I've heard. You don't want to mess around there unless you know what you are doing (does anyone?)

It's possible his shortness of breath and fear make the astralplanes seem dangerous to your dad.
I suppose, I don't really know much about it. He only told me this when I was diagnosed with psychotic disorder. He thought that maybe the voices I was hearing were from the astral planes. It kind of suprises me that he would say that. He's more into the science of abnormal psychology that the parascience. I haven't made up my mind yet.

Those beings are pretty out of this world.
