Traveler's Guide to the Astral Realm

This thread is not for debate, but rather a "logbook" for detailed description and informing people of their experiences during AP. I want to get a detailed collection of information about the astral plane, including what it looks, hears, feels, smells, or even tastes like. Anything and anyone you encounter on the plane can be described as well. Describe what these things and beings are like in great detail, including their behavior or actions (if possible). If you want you can even hypothesize in your post about what you think or know these beings were, including if you have encountered spirits, ghosts, or any other beings in your experiences. In time I want this thread to become more and more like a traveler's guide to the astral realm, things you may and may not see or encounter here. Do not worry if there are conflicting logs, as one person may talk about seeing the dead while another may talk about them not believing in ghosts. This thread's purpose is not to be an objective guide to the astral realm, but rather a collection of experiences that are subjective and therefore unique.

Also, when you are explaining things tell us whether or not these things take place on higher or lower planes (if you believe in those of course). If possible, also tell us how each of the different planes feel, and how shifting from one to the other is like. I would like people who do not have anything to contribute to this thread's original purpose to keep their comments to a minimum. This way readers can read more about astral experiences rather than people filling this thread with statements like "omg dat is sooo cool can u teech me 2 doo dat?".

Some highly-regarded members who have astral projection experiences often (you know who you are), I would love you to drop some lines here about what you have experienced. Many of us who haven't projected yet would appreciate this very much.

K so this is my only AP experience and I'm not even sure if it is one... but here it is anyway.

So I had just gotten up to go to the bathroom (irl) and I went back to be and started trying to fall asleep. No idea what I did, but I felt myself instantly floating over my body. I stepped out into the middle of my floor and watched myself sleep in awe for a few seconds then moved out through my door. It was weird because I didn't feel anything at all... not even my feet touching the ground. Then as I started to walk across my house to my kitchen, and everything started wavering, like an image projected onto water. Then it dissapeared entirely and I was in a sort of starfield-ish place where nothing was normal. I could see everything around me at once... like an omniscience sort of. Then everything suddenly vanished and I was sucked backward - like into a black hole or something - and into a dream.

      Yup.

Good thread setup Daniel. Bcomp, your account sure sounds like AP to me. Especially the wavering vision - I've had that in several OBEs and read plenty of other OBE accounts that mention this effect.

One of my OBEs took place in my childhood home, and everything was wavery at first. My vision cleared up about halfway through. It started out in my old bedroom, which is on the basement level of the house. I looked at what I thought was my sleeping body (although all I could see was a pile of covers) and then I made my way upstairs. I didn't walk up the stairs - it was more like swimming - I floated up propelling myself by pushing off the steps with my hands. Everything was dark and colorless - it was nighttime after all - except for a cat at the top of the stairs that watched me as I floated over her. (I know it was a she because she was a calico.) She was all lit up and in full color. Next, I made my way accross the living room and through the glass doors into the back yard. I looked around a bit then flew off.

On another occasion I was floating outside a cabin (that my body was lying in irl) up among some tree branches. I could feel the tree trunks and branches as my foot passed through them; it created a mild tingling sensation.

I entered the first OBE from the sleep state, and the second during meditation.

In all OBEs I've had, my sense of movement, motion and touch are different from lucid dreaming, regular dreaming or real life. They are keener - especially motion, which can cause me to feel dizzy or giddy even if it's slight.

      Naiya's Astral Travel Tricks

These are my tricks of the trade...all invented by accident and tested at the same time by yours truly. I make no guarantees about these tricks--they may not work for every person or every situation. But each one of these things has been useful to me at one time or another.

      The Cloak

Allow the wind to flow through you and quiet your thoughts into nothingness. Feel your energy seep into the ground until there is nothing left. Become your surroundings and meld with them.

This is really hard to maintain while moving, so keep still unless you've already gotten the hang of it.

      The Lizard's Tail

Warning: This only works once. An entity won't fall for it twice. Use it all you like if you need to get away from a manifest though.

Follow the steps for cloaking, except for one thing: direct a big portion of your energy a few feet away, (if you have time, form it in your shape), and give it a big push so it flies off. Now go in the opposite direction.

      The Scooby-Doo

You need to already have pretty good experience teleporting for this one, because you need to be able to do it as fast as possible. If you're too slow, it won't work. I prefer to use doors, which is of course where I got this idea.

I also should warn everyone that it's a last resort I-couldn't-possibly-be-in-deeper-shit-than-this kinda thing.

In any case, create a door for yourself, which is basically going to be your way of teleporting for this. Here's the crazy part--don't make a decision about where it's going to. Just create a random door. Now run through it. Repeat about a dozen times, and then go home.

The reason this works is that no matter how strong an entity is, it will have to relocate you every single time you teleport, which buys you all that time.

      The Phony Phone

When you astral travel, one of the most useful things you can create for yourself is a cell phone. For one thing, it makes it very easy to call a spirit guide or send for help--just say their name or type it in and you'll reach them. The phone just helps you concentrate your energy and focus on what you want to do a little better.

In any case, a phone can also help you ditch unwanted entities that may be following you. Put some energy into the phone and have it transmit your distress signal. Then throw it as far as possible, and go in another direction. If you want to see something really amusing, do this like five times in a row.

      The New Hotness

As I've said in other threads, spirits can look and sound like just about anything they want to. Sight and sound are really just our way of interpreting our surroundings and energy in different forms. A clever spirit can adjust its energy in order to manipulate our minds' way of interpretation.

Most of us default to what they're used to seeing in the mirror when they're on the astral plane. But you can also change your image once you're out of your body.

You need to do a strong visualization for this--have a very clear and detailed image in your mind of what you want to look like, and go for it. KNOW that you are changed, and the next thing you know, you will be.

Again, this only fools dumbest spirits (namely humans). For example, you're not gonna trick an angelic spirit into thinking you're a dragon or something; they'll know from your energy that you're a person. On the other hand, they don't care what you really look like, so if you just change your clothes or face, no one's gonna stop to lecture you (or laugh at you).

To be Continued...I have about a thousand of these.

Astral Realm stuff is a little beyond me. I've meditated in a fashion to get there and had some pretty odd experiences of coming across things I didn't expect.

The first time I ever tried it, I was sixteen and was trying to open up an astral temple. I decided it should be open to all. The idea of openness and freedom for all to come into it and worship Selene seemed good to me at the time, because I honestly believed it was in my head, therefore only I could get to it.

That night, I had a dream where I was in a temple and this demon had taken up residence there. I was trying to avoid him, but he could read my thoughts and knew that I knew he was evil. I remember him moving towards me and waking up with the feeling of him touching me. This kind of dream was really unusual for me at the time.

Since then, I've tried to be slightly more careful than that. I'm still very confused about this area, though.

Wow! At 16!!; how did you know if it wasn't just a LD? I mean it is common to come across things you've already established in earlier LDs right?

In fact how do you at all if it's LDs or entering the spiritual realm?

the indigo monks!! this is my only experience really

one night, I was doing a mix of buddhist meditation and christian prayer. the meditation asked me to visualize the color indigo, relating to the crown chakra *I think, my memory is poor* and to imagine indigo light as I drifted off to sleep

I find myself in a lucid dream and instantly wanted to visit the astral realm. The dream I was in was semi-vivid. Though it was dark and its colors were gloomy. after ditching a useless dream guide, who came off as a jerk, I demand the dream directly to take me to the astral. after having WILD sensations of zooming back to bed and out again, everything goes black.

when I open my eyes I am standing in a tiny hallway that leads to some outside world. This new experience is twice as vivid, twice as stable. Standing in front of me was a monk like being. He had indigo robes on, covering himself from head to toe. He had a pleasant and welcoming expression. Though his face actually wasn't human, it seemed a bit cat like. His eyes squinty slits with a cat like smile.

I quickly ask him if I was in the astral! And the monk nods his head and says yes. He moves aside to let me enter into the world. The first thing I notice is drapery, or tapestries. Large tapestries. They were all indigo, so indigo it was shimmering like jewels. I couldn't see the top of the tapestries. They seemed to go up indefinitely, as is flowing down as a waterfall from some void. The tapestries were flowing gently in some wind, seemingly more like flowing water.

There were more monks dressed in indigo robes. The space, feels like a temple of some sorts, with some areas with roofs, and other areas that were open aired. The monks didn't speak to me. They seemed busy doing their business, chanting or praying, or just keeping the place clean. Since everyone else, the monks seemed to know why they were here, and what to do, I was actually confused. I didn't know what to do. Flying around, I find rooms of ancient treasures and random things. The museum rooms were messy and unkept, cluttered.

The color indigo was dominant and vivid in this dream. I did doubt it was a genuine experience. And oddly enough, as I doubted it, the reality slowly descended into surreal dream nonsense until I felt I was forced out of it.

When I woke up, I questioned if it was real, and if I ruined it by doubting it. So I tried to re-enter it again. I did fall asleep, have a lucid dream, and dreamed of that place. But it wasn't the same. Not nearly as vivid, no monks, and more nonsense.
let me know if you ever meet any indigo monks

Ah... I think the difference in terms may be here. I never quite understand what is meant by visiting astral planes. Sometimes I meditate and visualise places and events, generally with a general idea of what I want to do and see. Sometimes I find that things happen when I'm meditating like that that I didn't expect. And sometimes these after effects leave me with a funny feeling that stays with me or effects my dreaming.

As for the distinction between dreams and real things in dreams that happen to be in other dimensions, I generally believe there's no such thing as other planes of reality and that if they do exist they reflect into our consciousness constantly, this is especially easy to pick up in dreams. I guess visiting an astral plane would be, under that definition, being really in tune with another reality. Maybe there's shades of grey.

Sound like astral? it was very strange when I looked out the window everything looked the same except for it had been raining and also the grass was different..it also seemed like in my astral body that everything was off looking sort of like things were bigger...perhaps cuz the spirit is smaller? Not sure...
Wow, that sounds like an amazing experience. I believe that was astral travel because of what was said about spirits making noises, and in your situation, you were hearing odd noises as well.. That is truly amazing.

The last few night I've been trying to lucid dream and keep my mind awake using the FILD method and I've noticed my arms and legs will start to go numb or paralyzed. Is this the right way to astral projection or lucid dreaming?

@ NAIYA: Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, I know not much about astral travel, but what may an entity be capable of doing to one?

I am pleased to announce that one of our most cherished members of DV that is familiar with astral projection quite well has posted her Astral Projection Tutorial today. Seeing as many of you might actually give it a shot, and that we all love people's opinions and logs on what happened to them when they did stuff on the astral realm, you can drop a line or two here about your experience(s).
