Did you do this immediatly when you first went to bed? If so this may be the problem. Most people find this to be the most difficult time to WILD (the technique you were trying). You will probably have more luck if you try to WILD after 3-4 hours of sleep.
If you did get some sleep and then tried to WILD, it sounds like you did everything right. For many people WILD is the most difficult LD technique. If you are determined to use WILD to become lucid, keep at it. Read the WILD tutorials. They each contain diffrent ideas on how to relax enough to fall asleep but to stay alert enough to keep your mind awake through it all.
