We have another member who says he has the same phenonemon as you do, being able to know you're dreaming yet having no control. I'll refer him to this page..

Recurring dream characters, though. A lot of people have them, it's quite common, and nothing to be worried about. Generally you get to 'know' them and that makes you dream about them more often. In my experience, i've never had one, so i couldnt give a personal view.

Have you started a dream journal yet? The reason I ask is because a dream journal can
help you improve dream recall. And perhaps if you improve your dream recall, you may be able to identify this male dream character of yours. Or at least see him more clearly.

Anyway, try it. Keeping a dream journal can help attain lucidity too, which can eventually lead to the improved dream control that you seek. Please PM me if you have more questions.

I was the one Damascus said he'd direct to this thread. I used to have the same thing you have, however minus the dream character. I would be aware that I'm dreaming, but would have no desire for lucidity. I have learned that rather than trying to be lucid, greater effectiveness comes from just holding the awareness that it is a dream and trying to absorb as much as you can from it. Then, when you wake up, it serves as a tool for you to analyze what you subconscious mind is trying to tell you.

The trick, I would suggest, is trying to remember as much as you can from your dreams. I find with this sort of dream phenonenon you are best not getting lucid, because then you tear the dream apart and fall into another (at least, that's what happens to me, I gain so much lucidity that I enter a world of white and nothingness because I'm too powerful). I might suggest the thing I use, called Threading. However, there's a lot involved to it, and if you want to learn more we'd have to chat so I could see how you might best apply it.

Yes, I previous had a dream diary, so I continued it again after joining on Saturday.
I was wondering if LD should be avoided by people who suffer from sleep paralysis as a regular sleep condition.

I think I joined in May, unsure. But I wrote down your tips and other hints to try reaching LD.
I have also kept a journal. A friend advised that I should also record what type of day I was having and see if anxiety or stress influences anything.
I was very unsuccessful the first week or so, so I pretty much left it. I must say that I find it very hard to relax my body completely, lucky I have found that I can simply go to sleep normally and still be aware in the dream that I'm dreaming.
After a lot more practice I now know several things that appear to happen in my dreams.
I don't have feet, I have on several occasions looked down and have realised that my sight of vision ends at my knees in dreams (weird) Has anyone had the same experience)
I somethings hear things in my dreams that shouldn't be there. Like my heart beat (my best guess is that it is my heartbeat.) And noises from outside (my boyfriend get up to use the loo, sirens from an police car going by) I know they aren't suppose to be in the dream.

The dreams themselves are pretty ordinary. I've spend a day back in school, gone to my grandparents house at the sea.
I've even made effort to try to find out why I always feel that someone is there, with me when I dream, to absolutely no success. I have noticed that while my dreams appear more vivid, they appear to have lost temperature. I remember getting cold in a dream once - but now the temp. always seems comfortable if that is the way to put it.
I have alway more recently tried changing the direction of my dreams. I guess I am forcing the issue and I have twice woken up while doing it. Still requires practise, I think.
