I don't think odd hours will make a difference to your dream recall ability, as long as you've grown accustomed to those hours and your sleep times aren't random.
As for increasing dream recall - what about instead of an alarm use a vibrating thing (no not that vibrating thing) discussed somewhere on the 'Ataining Lucidity' forum. FAiling that, you just need to persist and eventually you will see an improvement. Remember: you will suceed
