Used to happen to me quite a lot when I was younger, alas not so much any more.
The lovely spinning feeling as you're falling, I always used to wait for it before I went to sleep.![]()
Hey! this is my first post, and i have to say thanks for this website, awesome! I sadly dont remember most dreams, but oh well.
What I really have a question about is this weird feeling I have when I am about to fall asleep. It feels as if I am laying on a board being rocked like a see saw, my waist being the axis. It feels like very fast movements, and I remember it happenening from when I was very young.
It always happens when i am aware and awake, but always laying down with my eyes closed. There is no audio or visual component, and I do not feel the actual board described above, just the shaking.
I have been able to induce it upon myself by holding my breath and thinking about it, but it usually only lasts five or six seconds, speeding up. But I like the feeling.
Am i an idiot and this happens to everyone who holds their breath, or is it something else. I have never seen anything about it, so any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.
Sounds like a hypnagogic hallucination, which can as you've noticed be visual, auditory, or proprioceptic/tactile/kinesthetic like you are experiencing.
Most people will experience HH if they keep themselves awake long enough that their mind stays conscious while their body begins to transition into sleep. Sounds like that's what you're doing, although I have no idea how holding your breath could be causing this as well. I don't really know much about proprioception though.
Interesting, I dont really know why holding my breath helps, maybe it helps me concentrate? Oh well, now I know whats going on, so thanks!
I think what is happening is you are feeling nothing and your mind isn't used to that so it makes something up. When your brain disconnects from your body it feels weird, it's literally the feeling of nothing.
I used to have that feeling alot I still have it sometimes it goes away if i move

I get this a bit at sleep onset. It seems to happen a lot in daydream mode too. I wonder if you can magnify the feeling and tip yourself into a dream or something.
Love me..or leave me
I think you were experiencing sleep paralysis. If you can induce sleep paralysis that easily you might be a natural for lucid dreaming with the wild technique.
LDs - a lot

I used to and still get that. Except when it happens to me, my veiw is like a camera zooming out of my body as it starts rotating slowly.

Yup I get this, this usually tells me I am about to fall asleep or enter sleep paralysis
if you can read this then you are about to be punched
I looked into WILDs, and i suppose this could be one of the entering stages or something, but I have one more question. As far as WILDing goes, do you have to be re-entering sleep between REM cycles? Do I have to wake up in the middle of the night for it to work, or can I enter a lucid dreaming state right from the get go.
I doubt you could, now that i think about it, entering a lucid dreaming state from complete consciousness doesnt sound like it would logically happen (although i did see they mentioned something about afternoon naps in the thread).
Thanks for all the feedback, glad to know im not alone.
