once you have started a dream journal and learn how to wake yourself up in the middle of a night to record your dreams, how do you know where to go from there? what is the best way to have a lucid dream? even after all the reading and researching lucid dreams, i am still unsure how to tell the difference? i really do believe that i have had lucid dreams before but upon realizing that i was dreaming have forgotten those dreams..and i am not sure where to go from here? any hints or advice?

For some people making RCs a habit is enough to cause them to RC in a dream and become lucid, but some people are diffrent.
I suggest working on RCs and then choose a LD technique you think you might have some luck with. Most newbs choose WILD, but WILD is one of the most difficult methods out there! I suggest maybe MILD. Or if you are willing to put in the work inorder to get more control-able results, maybe go for DEILD. Because everyone is diffrent it is hard even guess what might be best for you!

You've got your daytime practice, and your night time practice. During the day, try to stay aware of your surroundings, keep from getting distracted, and constantly question whether or not everything is a dream. That is where the reality checks are helpful.
Then, at night, try watching how you sleep. Watch how you fall asleep, pay attention to when you wake up in the middle of the night, and how you enter and exit dreams. That is where something like WBTB, MILD, and DEILD can work.
Attack it from both angles, and think of it like a fun experiment. You are paying attention to how you really view the world while awake and asleep.
