It's not really short for it, it's just a more informal way of saying it...ever watch "The African Queen"? With Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn? Gifts are things that are recieved. You can pay for a gift. Also, that gift (no matter what it is) has to be paid for, because the giver had to pay, and even if it was a free offer, the company would need to pay to make it. Also, adding "free" to an offer makes it sound more appealing.
