If there were no oxygen in the water, then yes *no clue what im saying.

i was thinking like if you took the fish out of water... would that be drowning or asphyxiation?

funny, i was just boring my friends with this matter yesterday. being captain biology, i should know these things.
sometimes people wonder why a fish would die when you take it out of water, since it just takes the oxegyn from the water, why wouldnt it be able to take the oxygen out of the air? well, the problem lies in the physical construct of the gills. the insides of the gills are made of a very thin tissue-like membrane. when in the water, they float, so to speak, and are held in the right position within the gills. however, when the fish is taken out of the water, the membrane in the gills is too heavy to support itself, so it just crumples into a gooey pile inside the gill. it can still take some oxygen from the air, but it has to be at its full extended pisition to work well enough to live. this is why a fish would not live very long out of the water. i guess that would be considered asphyxiation. but then again, drowning is a kind of asphyxiation, isnt it? asphyxiation is just cutting off someones air supply. you could drown a fish in water by covering its gills.
