      It's not being compressed, it's being converted into a gif.
      I messaged PJ or some other admin about it ages ago but it's still doing it.
      Upload a JPG or PNG, and it'll turn it into a GIF, even if it matches the size requirements fully.

      So I figure this belongs in the Meta Forum.

      No, the point is that the images get converted into a gif even when they are completely within the limits and don't require any compression or resizing whatsoever, thus actually increasing their file size and reducing their quality.

      And all of that doesn't seem very sensible, when you think about it.
