When I was little and I heard it for the "first time" I was like haha that is a wierd word I can't believe I never heard it before...but then I watched Dr. doolittle again and then I heard it used again...So obviously things happen all the time you just don't notice until later.

Yeah, we kind of filter out almost everything we see or hear.

Kind of awesome, I read about this guy that had some accident. He just bumped his head real hard or something. He was driving home from the hospital, thinking everything was okay, but he got pulled over two times for driving through red lights. He thought he didn't see they were red because it was slightly foggy. But when he came home, he found out that everything was 'foggy', but because he couldn't see color at all anymore!

So, basically your brains work in such a way that you can not notice some pretty insane things. Also, like how if you let people count how many times a group of people pass a red ball on a video, they don't notice a giant bunny-rabbit passes through the group. It's just filtered out.

Yeah, my friend showed me this video on You Tube called 'Shoes' or something and he was surprised I had never seen it before. The next day on TV I saw an expose on it's creator.

I then told that friend about lucid dreaming. He'd never heard of it before but the next day in psych class he heard the term.

It works the same way when I hear a new alleged 'commonly used phrase.' I think, 'It can't be that common or I'd have heard it!' Sure enough, it isn't long until I hear it.

The really funny application of that was when my friend told us what a lazy lucy was, (my friend had no idea and I was under the impression it was some kind of chair.) Literally within 10 minutes we saw someone comment on one and they called it a lazy lucy...

It's all really quite funny.

I saw one that was pretty ridiculous. There were 30 or so of us and we instructed to count how many times a basketball was dribbled. We were told it would 'be funny how different answers we got.' (That was the cover.) We were all within about 5 and figured we showed the instructor. (No-one noticed! Well, one person who had seen it before but he kept quite.)

We all watched it again and were told to pay no attention to the ball. A guy in a gorilla costume walked right in the middle of the screen, completley visible in the light. The first time he walked across he just walked slowly. The second time he walked again but waved at the camera as he passed. The third time he jumped up and down and did this disco dance... hehehe

When I heard the phrase Knocking on Wood for the first time, I heard it or read it at least once every day for a 2 week period. Then I only started hearing it occasionally or "regularly/normally"
