To be a Man [Just watched FIGHTCLUB]

What does it mean to be a man? In the last hundred years, men have been painted as war mongrels and brutish. We have almost seemed to be emasculated, our society favoring the feminine qualities over everything else. I mean, its what makes our society work now, doesn't it (feminism)?

My question is, how do we live like authentic men in our present age?

A man is true to himself.

A man can swallow his pride.

A man is willing to die for what he believes in.

A man can argue with his women without having to raise his hand.

A man doesn't jump to conclusions.

A man controls his emotions, especially anger.

A man isn't spiteful, nor does he hold a grudge.

A man is a leader, but is also willing to be a follower when appropriate.

I guess you have to change with the times (sigh); other than that I cannot answer the question. Men are wussified in our society.

I am stuck in the past, and hence miserable. My passion is too strong to be a suit and tie warrior who battles the innocent civilians by robbing them to get ahead.

That was not very philosophical but I am bitter.

Its becoming more and more normal to find a man who likes both Death Metal and Disco, shooting guns and sewing clothing, Working for a living and raising children. If you learn to branch out, you might realize that its nice to not have to fear looking like a wuss (seems like a contradiction to me anyway) in order to just do something you enjoy.

Defined gender roles, and those that advocate such a thing are so antiquated and ridiculous.

There really(other than the obvious anatomical necessities) is no way to define what makes a man anymore.

      IMO.

It pisses me off... like my mom is currently going through a pretty nasty separation/possible divorce from my dad and she keeps questioning whether she should or not, because the Bible says the wife is meant to submit to the husband.

      Bullshit.

      yeah, gender roles are weird.
What I've come to almost a conclusion of is that the most stereotypical traits are actually generally around what they are. I mean, the big ones dont really change in any society. Men are always the warriors, women are usually emotional (not a bad thing), etc. With room for exceptions of course.

I think about the wussified thing, men are degraded and put down for their aggressive nature and contradictions to the feminine nature. Men shouldnt have to be 'nice'. Thats a cage. Not to say that we should be evil, but for some reason our society seems to value the female nature and degrade the males.

Dare I say masculinism? No, because the feminists would eat me alive lol. :s

Gender roles are pretty much just the natural extension of inherent biological qualities. For example, if you think that men aren't naturally dominant as compared to women you seriously need to brush up on your knowledge in basic evolutionary and biological psychology.

      To be a man:
You must be swift as the coursing river
You must have all the force of a great typhoon
You must have all the strength of a raging fire
You must be mysterious as the dark side of the moon
<----- watched Mulan too many times.

Having said that, to contribute somewhat to the topic, I agree with Xaqaria. I don't think society favors the feminine qualities now a days, but now it is more acceptable for men to portray some of those qualities that might have been considered less manly in the past.

Amen to that. I like metal, bloody movies like Rambo just 'cause of the blood, violent games, Romance movies, daytime TV shows like Tyra etc etc. I admit these shamelessly. Personally, I think it's pretty pitiful how some guys will try to act "manly", rejecting any notion of enjoyment of things a female typically enjoys and vice versa. I will readily admit that I'm gay (though I'm not fyi) when others accuse me of being gay just to point out their own bigotry. People are too afraid of expressing what they like and being who they are.

you now i look around today and i think that this world kinda sucks...

like i can agree that biologically men are more powerful, and such. i mean i'd be stupid to deny it, and i realize that feminism has completely sucked a little man out of every man. i think it was a good idea you know to be equal, but not by demoralizing men, or by insulting them or degrading them. if women really think that they are better than men, then they are doing nothing but kying to themselves, and being selfish and stupid, but likewise to men, if you think thtat you are beter than women, you are no better than that. i do know that i have stated b4 that women (religiously) are not equal to men, but that is a religious topic which i will drop... now.

anyways, i personally apologize to the sweet chivalrist men out there, for what women did... lol. and guys dont be afraid to go back in time a bit... (no beating though!!!)

Your words...not mine. You cannot logically infer all that from one word. Hence why I stated at the end that I was not being philosophical; it was a rant, as in not clarified or even well thought out. The latter is something you seem proficient at. I don't pretend to know everything. Keep your straw man tactics to yourself.

      Wrong.

      Wussy =/= 'showing emotions'

Wussy = weak or timid. A person with no guts, basically. If you don't stand up for yourself, if you don't follow your own ideals, if you don't go your own way, if you don't persuit your own happiness and goals in life, and in stead, you follow others, subject yourself to anyone but yourself, you are a wussy.
Is generally accompanied by neediness, excessive whining and shyness. Wussies are normally scared shitless to take risks, which makes it so he doesn't evolve, in a sense of experience. It makes it so that he can't get round to his own dreams in life.

Also: "Gender roles are pretty much just the natural extension of inherent biological qualities. For example, if you think that men aren't naturally dominant as compared to women you seriously need to brush up on your knowledge in basic evolutionary and biological psychology."

      Agreed. There are gender roles.

Also: "I don't agree. I think now more than ever, men and women are able to fit into any social category they want to, and they can also mix them all in any way they see fit. I find it strange you only chose external qualities to define a 'wussy'. Last time I checked, 'wussy' reffered to something going on on the inside. Wussies aren't defined by liking disco or death metal. Or shooting guns and sewing clothing. It refers to the internal qualities. The personality. How you act. Not what you like.

well i believe it is okay for a man to show some emotion. i mean it is really just bad to hold things in. it does not make that man a wuss. i mean if he like whines every day, then yes, but otherwise, i find it to be okay.

Damn, I had thought of a few more, but I can't recall them now. All I can think of is a few things of what doesn't make a man.

Sitting on your ass watching a bunch of sweaty guys chase after a ball does not make a man. If anything, it makes a moron.

Talking shit and fronting like you run shit does not make you a man. If anything, it means you're insecure.

Oh, and I just thought of these:

A man can love, defend and support his family.

      A man doesn't lie unnecessarily.

A man not only recognizes his faults, he takes the time to try and correct them.
