      Time...and moments

      Okay, this is hard to explain b/c it's from a conversation with someone quite awhile ago, but I just want to know what other's think...maybe people who understand quantum physics...whatever
      I was talking with this guy I met from Jerusalem, and we were talking about how the only thing that really exists is the moment, there is no past, nor future, only present, only moment...like a single point in a line of infinity...but see, in a single point in a line there is an infinity of points within that point, so when we are moving through time, from moment to moment, we are jumping these points of infinity...that's what the sensation of time passing is (his theory)... not something that actually exists in the moment which is only one point, with an infinity of points (of time) lying within it...that puts us in a very powerful position...that puts us in movement with infinity, but at the same time denies us the sensation of understanding that infinity in the moment...my friend tries to practice that awareness of that inifinity within infinities, in each moment...to bring the sacred quality to all things by being aware of everything possibly in a moment...mundane (what we see) to spiritual (the infinite of all things at any and all moments.
      Come on...im sure there's more technical ways of explaining this...by the way...death doesn't exist

      Yes, that is sort of like my feeling on the subject. Time as we experience it is an illusion. All times, "past", "present", "future" exist simultaneously.

      Right now, you are reading this, while you are living as a slave 1000 years ago, while you are living as a philosopher 500 years from now, while you are a student 75 years ago, while you are an evil master 3000 years ago, while you are totally enlightened 10,000 years from now.

      All in perfect balance. The concept of Karma as we understand it is invalid. Karma states that all negative or positive actions we take will balance/are being balanced at a different time.

      If time is a point, then all is in perfect balance and harmony. There is no need for a law of Karma to balance things. All things are balanced.

      You know, I kind of talked about that in one of my papers in my Inner Search for God class...I was talking about how I couldn't subscribe to mankinds idea of death, because its not really a real phenomenon...because (at the time I was reading a lot of St. Augustine and St. Theresa) I felt that by reading their books, and by the fact that I understood so well their spirit, were their spirits not partaking of something within mine, and therefore somehow still alive through me...like a dream I had of being a basket weaver in the middle ages and I was the only basket weaver who had gotten ahold of some purple die and people were coming from all over to buy my purple baskets...it wasn't until I was awake that I thought about indigo...but why would I dream such a random dream about something I know nothing about unless some part of my own spirit had experienced that...it makes sense that one person is composed of many people, through DNA we are biologically linked, and our biology has spiritual dimension as well...fun things yes...

      Whoa!!! This topic was eye-opening for me. Especially the parts about infinite points being in a point....Oh my....that's extreme.

      I'd prefer to live by infinity than by time. Time seems so...constrained.

      A lot of philosophers and quantum theorists believe that we are not bound by time. Sure, clocks can accurately measure our perception of our passage between space-time events...but that's precisely what it measures - our perception. But time co-exists with space in space-time diagrams. Worldlines continue on while being altered by gravity, mirror-esque effects, etc. and meet other worldlines in the midst of relativity. Too many people are thinking in terms of space (3-dimensional) and time separately. But it is space-time (3+1, 2+1, or 1+1 dimensions), as in space+time...4-dimensional. We are all travelling through time simply by existing, only we don't know how to control our movement through time the same way we control our movement through space.
      But, just like space, time can be curved as well as straight...thus space-time can be curved or straight. Just because we only go along with the straight worldline A, doesn't mean we have to. We can meet and cross between worldlines...or perhaps even bend them... of course, only knowing the little bit that i do, i'm not even sure what all this could entail in terms of time travel - but this would result in some sort of time travel.

      i love quantum theory :razz:

      Where would our Ideas of the past come from if there were know past? Sounds simple but seriously?
      And the concept of time slowing down or stopping at the spead of light. If that were so time would not exist for you, but it would for everyone around you. So if you were to travel @ the speed of light for ten years and returned you would be the same where the people you came back to are ten years older.
      Actually I think this is a bit out of sorts from what your point is Lokisbtch. The hole time thing gets my wheels spinning and I go astray sorry

      If you ask me its what you do in the very moment you are in that counts for anything. When you wake in tomorrow will today have meant anything or will it just be another moment?

      If today did not mean anything then your tomorrow would be meaningless as well.
      If you only live for today only you will have knoe future. If you believe in the future that is.

      Perhaps we all exist in different planes of time; each second of living is a plane I suppose. All together there are maybe 10 to the 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 0000000000000000000000..... power of planes. We perceive each one as time, but in reality each second or plane exists in a infinite amount. Not like rewinding and playing the same frame over and over, but really the same thing is constantly existing. Words could not describe it. Maybe it's like always being on the same plane of existance, for ever, but your 'moment self' thinks that it is on the correct plane, but in reality 'all' of you are. This would probably mean that you are one in everything, not omnipresent or anything (since you could not live forever), but close.

      Just something I thought about.

      I think I read something about this somewhere. I believe string theory tries uses a time plane like this, or maybe it was all quantum physics. I'm not sure exactly what they were talking about in the article, but I have an explanation of sorts.

      Time is not continuous, it is a series of matter frozen in a frame. The passage of time is not like traveling on a line, but more like jumping from one frame to the next. I'm not too sure about the whole infinite part, I think the space between each frame is not infinitesimally small, but the gap is so small that it might as well be. The way you explained it seemed to be like you were saying inside each frame, an infinite number of frames occured. Or, how I see it there is no measureable gap between each frame. Either way, you can look at it like numbers. For every number, there is another number and you can always fit a number between two numbers. There is almost no difference between each subsequent number, but they are two seperate numbers. They are so close together that when you are counting, you don't and can't count them. Each frame of time is so close together that you don't see them and you don't noctice them, but they are still there. This makes time appear to be continuous, but it is but a gaint slide show of frames. The "next" frame is determined by the current position of matter. There is no movement in each frame, just the illusion that something is or will be moving.

      I get the feeling that I left something out, but I need to go...

      Sort of like watching a movie. You see things at (i think this is what it is, correct me if I'm wrong) the theaters in 26 frames a second, which is soo fluid you think it is one continous 'sequence'. When you look at each frame, it is frozen and still, but when thrown together at fast 'speeds' you see the movie. Like you said, maybe time is like this (frames).

      I found a great way to apply this to the fate/free will discussion that is related to this thread, in case you want to check it out. I hadn't seen this thread when I made it but now that I have read it I think it might make very interesting debate...

      meh, I believe in predetermined destiny... But pretty much only big points, such as when you expire, or when the world ends... I don't have anything to back it up, it just seems rational to me...
