Thread: Why?

Ah yes I know that stream of conscience. Allways one question remains. You can explain alot of things, like you brush your teeth becouse you both want to keep your body intact and look acceptable towards other individuals of your species, becouse your instinct tells you that. Evolution made that usefull, to survive.

And evolution is an passive proces, it just happens. We are alive becouse our ancerstors were, and billions of years ago a single-celled organism reproduced. There isn't even really a reason in the existance of life on earth, it just 'is'.

Further back it allways leads to the question of: Why does the universe exists, and why in this form? Why are there atoms in it? Why is there time?

Even religion does not awnser the very question how from nothing something came, and something very specific (atoms, time, heat, physic laws).

The universe (or earth) is beatifull. However a universe with just a single atom would amaze me just as much as this complex universe. Becouse I have no Idea how Anything truely came to be in the beginning...

Thanks for replying. I pretty much understude all this already, but i enjoyed the way you expressed it. However, the question remains, what does one do when there "isn't even really a reason in the existance of life on earth, it just "is." ? What critiria does one use to choose one's actions?

I guess i could just do what ever i want to do. I have tried this. The bummer is that i don't really want to do anything. Nothing seems that much better to me than anything else.

I have the basic wants like hunger, and wanting to aviod pain. But other than that i just kinda act randomly.

Hey dude, look I understand that we are are compelled to think, analize and ask questions... That is good, I do it all tha time. You say you have the question, THE QUESTION, why? why do we live, why did that cell millions of years ago turn from organic material, into a living organism. Why are we living right now, and not 200 years ago, why am I human, couldnt I have lived as a... dog. Why do I exist, why was my concience formed, WHY why WHY!!?

It is incrdibly hard to find an answer to this man. I havent found it yet, but when I do, Ill tell you, and you do likewise, ok?

But I will give you a tip, some advice, you say that becouse you find no meaning in things, you find existence boring, senseless, meaningless... you are like the mage student that embarks himself looking for magic, then, after many years, he realises magic is no-where, HE is magic. Life, existence has no meaning, by itself.. YOU have the wonderfull oportunity of giving life a meaning. About a year ago I went trhu the same.... philosophicall depression you are going thru, its like... The curse of those who think to much.
I didnt feel the urge to do anything, nothing... so sad, I cryed at nights...

Then one day I thought to myself: God Im being a big fucking asshole!! fuck!!! shit!! Im crossing a brigde I havent even fucking got to. I have been given the unimaginibly wonderfull opurtunity to LIVE, and Im waisting it thinking about dying. FUCK IT!! dude do you remeber stuff that happened 4, 5 years ago? it feels like yesterday huh? imagine yourself 20 years from now.. thinking about life gone by, your gonna die, And THEN, it will hit you... YOUVE BEEN AN ASSHOLE... litteraly.

I would never say this to anyone, but I say it to you becouse you need to hear it:

STOP THINKING, AND START LIVING!! Dont expect to find a miracule BE THE MIRACULE, dont look around expecting to find a meaning to life.. GIVE LIFE A MEANING... Do hat ever the fuck you want to do... Ill tell you what i have been doing just to give an example...

I have been writing a book, a love story... for I am so romantic
I have been drawing manga
I have been playing soccer till my feet feal like they are gonnafall of (this is what makes me happiest of all things)
I have been going out with chicks talking kissing having sex.
I have been dong a lot of exercise, becouse its cool to be hot, now I know.
I have been cooking a lot, and nothing ordinary, but fancy exotic meals.
I have been having A LOT of fun studying at the university ( I study Philosophy)
And every time I see myself sitting down, thinking to much, and god-damn wasting time, I kick myself up and go do hand work, you know manual stuff, like painting my house, fixing chairs, washing the car, doing the lawn, making cool stuff out of junk... something that makes me tired, and guess what? IT WORKS.
And trying to find my Soul Mate, My perfect woman, but I think she is hiding somewhere..

Be happy man, live enjoy yourself, live your goddamn life, forget about shyness, see a beutifull girl on the street and want to ask her out, fuck do it. LIVE YOUR LIFE, WHY? BECOUSE YOULL ONLY LIVE IT ONCE.

I sincerely hope you read it all, if you like it and put it to use, I will be honoured, Oh yeah by the way, I ts the first time I have ever told anyone this... really. And maybe you are thinking I some god danm old guy trying to patronize you I m not... Im not trying to patronize you, and Im 17 years old.

Do you ever find yourself just laughing for no reason but that everything seems funny?

Existentialist, i was never bummed about death. But your advice seems sound enough. "Do what ever the fuck you want to do." I have also done this. It is very much fun and i assosiate it with the zen thing kinda.

unreasonable laughter is the best kind!

try to remember how you laughed as a child...WHY you laughed.
chances are it wasn't dependent on cynicism.

the earliest time i could remember while thinking about this at work today was in grade four, with my then best friend colin. we were in a school assembly, and he was three chairs to my right.

gradually we started looking at each other mischeviously, then smirking, then as if we would burst into laughter.

i vividly remember how we both monitored the shaking of each other's shoulders with our peripheral vision as we barely managed to suppress our laughter...after awhile we could no longer contain it as we both looked directly at each other and exploded with mirth (much to our teacher's chagrin).

recently i've been getting that feelingfairly often during the day...laughing in public places, or at work...and if people give wierd looks, that only makes it even more comical, just like how our teacher's reprimanding glare only made us laugh harder, til we were crying (incidentally, we were both very shy and never tried to draw attention to ourselves).

the odd thing is, it IS something one must almost "practice".
for instance, you can kickstart laugher by fake laughing until it becomes genuine. there are even sects dedicated to this in the east, who gather daily to laugh. if they aren't geniune at first, they become so.

zen is simply remembering how to be a child.

Zen is way cool, and it is part of my life. walk in the rain, play with dirt, laugh, laugh, and laugh, these things remind us that we are alive. And most importantly, that being alive is fun.
