Two problems I can foresee:
1. Choking on the gum during sleep. This is fairly unlikely as children fall asleep while chewing gum all the time. However, the possibility is real and should be taken seriously.
2. Gum entangled in and adhered to hair. Have you read the children's story "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day"? This might be one of those experiments which is best suited for people w/ short hair.
Otherwise, I think it's an interesting idea that actions undertaken before sleep can be transferred into dreaming despite the relatively long length of time between falling asleep and entering the first REM cycle.
Keep us updated on your progress! If this goes well, it might lead to other LD induction techniques in the same vein.
