Yay, Science fair! I am a regional judge. One thing that really catches a judges eye is a unique experiment. I've seen countless product comparisons like "Which detergent REALLY does work better" They are kind of boring.
The guy I gave Grand Prize to last year did an experiment on the relationship of the number of turns of wire in an electro magnet to the number of ball bearings it could pick up.
He kept nice graphs and tried in increments of 50 turns, from 50 to about 500.
It was a simple experiment, but he did completely follow the scientific method and had data to back up every step of his experiment.
My daughter took 2nd place in the regionals one year with this experiment:
She had a series of ink blots and showed them to about 50 people ranging from 5 years old to 60 years old. She graded their responses on how imaginative their answers were.
I am thinking about helping my son this year. Magnetic breaking, the relationship between magnet placement and rotor materials used.
