So, Sony developed a machine which uses ultrasound to duplicate all five senses into the brain. The machine was created for virtual video game play in which you can feel, smell, taste, see, and hear your surroundings. Of course there are many faults to this machine and it has not been released into public, and may never be. One of the major faults is that because this machine can manipulate exactly all your joys without having to deal with the consiquences of being fat, dying, getting a disease, etc. This will of course cause everyone to indulge their lives in this beautiful creation and let go of their real lives.
But what I'm trying to say is if they already developed a machine which can put all of these things into your head, from a machine; why not create a machine which can take all of these things out of your head and put them into the machine. There is most likely something wrong with my theory, but my guess is that, sometime in the future, such a machine is plausible. The major risk of ultrasound into your head does not exist here as you can't really indulge your life into watching dreams, besides only one sence is needed for this expermient and that is vision, the other four senses can be put to rest. Who wouldn't want their dreams played back to them? Heck, if you're lucid you could make yourself a nice little free porn. You know, THAT is what ticks me off about the current patent system. Sony used TMI to stimulate brain cells and then lays claim with their patent to any possible use of this technique in the future.
The judge that reviewed that patent application should be shot. When I submitted my patent, I had to have a device that demonstrated my claims and lots of documention around it to back up my claims.
Sony is playing a lot of what-if here. It is equivilent to someone patenting sunshine and laying claim to any solar powered process that may be invented.

There are some lawyers down in the states that tried suing a company up in my neck of the woods for patent infringment. Turns out, they have thousands of patents on 'ideas', even though none of them have any type of scientific background what-so-ever. A friend of mine was hired to 'bust em down' by showing that thier patents could not produce a working device.
The patent system sure could use an overhaul... particularly with large corportations patenting life (ie. Monsanto
).
As long as Sony's patent doesn't produce a working device, I don't think they're patent counts.
