Those are some phenomenally unfunny persons.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

This is the first time I have heard either. Usually dislike American comedians, especially stand-up, possibly because I don't watch or know enough of their work, and these failed to buck the trend.

Maria Bamford was painfully bad from the start, much of the reaction was to her voice rather than the actual content - which was of poor standard. Very obvious jokes with little to no insight or subtext.

Margarat Cho was slightly better, but seemed far too absorbed by the idea that she was telling it how it is - the pretentious nonesense on the voiceover at the start of Assassin is a prime example. Her humour was reasonable, but far too wrapped around the idea that she was being controversial, and the time she gave for each audience reaction was disproportionately overdone.
Ironically, while calling England dull, the 'controversial', 'telling it straight' views she made wouldn't have shocked or impressed anyone in England.

Compared to the more postmodern, ironic stand-up comedians I favour, this vaguely failed to impress.

Women in comedy perplexes me. I have yet to see an above average female stand-up performance, and the only other female comedic work that I would say stands out would be French and Saunders.

Her voice is part of her act...did you watch the second video of her?

Anyways, my favorite joke of hers was the missing piece to this golden medallion joke.

She goes into a joke about what kind of man she is looking for... "just a guy who has a job, is romantic, likes to talk, and has the missing piece to this golden medallion."

Meanwhile these aren't the clips that made me want to post about them...they were just the first clips I got when I clicked their names in.

Could we have better examples of their work, then?

Have you ever seen stand-up from Ricky Gervais, or Russell Brand? While not the absolute best, they're the ones that are gripping me right now - their later work far more so than their earlier, especially in the case of Russell Brand. Only Joking was something exceptional.

Or Jimmy Carr? He's turned the basic joke-punchline, joke-punchline structure into something special, through his perfect delivery and obvious appreciation of what he does.

Of the stand-up comics I've seen, British ones usually rate far better than the American ones. While I'm not so bad on British comics, I'm not so aware of American stand-up...Chris Rock I've investigate but found too mindless for words, these two you've suggested are average but nothing special, and a few other ones rate similarly, but I would love suggestions of American stand-up to investigate.

Stand-up comedy is a passion. Indulge it.

Most of Cho's comedy stems from her ethnicity (her parents talky talky stuff) and her bisexuality thing. I think she is bi or something heh.

Bamford is just her talking about how her life sucks and then jokes about people...

Eh, I guess they aren't very special comedians, but I do like them a bit.

I'll check out those comedians you mentioned.

I agree, im not so much a fan of either Maria Bramford or Margeret Cho. Actually, and i'm not saying this because i'm sexist or anything, but i don't think i have seen many female comedians that I found extremely funny.

I don't think it is a sexist thing, there just aren't that many female comedians that I find particularly humorous. Or comediennes, I suppose.

Possibly women find them far funnier, I don't know.

I have two of Bamford's comedy albums, and I love listening to both of them. When watching her on TV though, her comedy falls flat for me...not sure why. As someone else mentioned, her use of her voice when telling her jokes is a large part of her act. So it probably just translates better into an audio-only experience.

I like Wanda Sykes and Jen Kirkman also...Sarah Silverman is hit or miss for me, she tries too hard to be "controversial" to really make me laugh.

I hate Silverman's stand up, but her show makes me lol without fail
It's the exact opposite for my bro... wierd lol.

Cho is ok... she does the same jokes too much and like Tao said, she tries way too hard to be edgy and doesn't do well at all.

Bamford is as good as female comedians come, but there have yet to be any phenomenal female stand ups... it just doesn't seem to be a woman's career yet.

      Silverman enjoys retarded poop jokes.

People don't dislike poop jokes because its a "taboo" subject, its because its not funny...at all.

Poop jokes are corny and unclever, i can't stand those kind of tasteless jokes. I mean if there is actual comedy behind it and fecal matter is somehow involved in the joke then it's ok, but if the punchline is poop and poop alone then it's just stupid.

      *edit*
oops sorry i misread, i thought you said people like poop jokes, after re-reading it i don't know how i could've misread though

All of them are fucking win, Patton Oswalt is the winningest of them, Eugene Mirman comes in a very, very, very close second.

Yeah Mirman is my favorite...the dude is hilarious.

Patton Oswalt kind of gets on my nerves and his jokes always try a little too hard for my taste.

As for poop jokes, they are only funny if the standup shakes a turd out of his or her pant leg while telling them.
