I don't see why you would want to spend money on such an outdated piece of hardware. Sure, it's fun, but unless you pay less than 10$, just save up the money and go for either the price-dropped 360 or save some money for a PS3.
I have to admit for the price,it looks pretty enticing.
Alot of the classic PS2 games,I haven't played yet,
like God of War which is a steal at $19.99 Other
classics,I missed out on,Devil may cry..Metal Gear
Solid,and even Grand Theft Auto.
Right now the PS3 is a little too pricey. What do
you all think?..still alot of bang for the buck??![]()

Who cares if it is outdated? There are still lots of people that play systems even older than that. The PS2 did have a lot of great games and if you haven't played a lot of them why not buy a PS2 and the games? What's the cheap version of the 360 cost? Imagine how many games you could get if you spent the same amount on a ps2.![]()

I have both a PS2 and an Xbox 360, and I still play on my PS2 almost more than my XB360.
All the games you mentioned are in my opinion the best games on PS2. And they've got pretty good graphics considering the hardware. Well, atleast when it comes to DMC 3, MGS 3 and God of War.
San Andreas alone should give you many hours of fun if you're into the GTA games. So yeah, I would go for it![]()
My point wasn't that something outdated can't be fun, but that spending money on it is roughly equivalent to throwing it out the window. It's like buying a new Windows XP for a new computer: What's the point?
Also, GTA4 will piss all over SA.
All in all, this thread is completely pointless. The question isn't specific enough. "Still a good buy?". It's the exact system as when it came out so why would it be any worse? It's not like a fruit that gets old and wrinkly when you forget about it. Of course the PS2 is a decent console, but everything's outdated and the graphics suck. If you're on a very tight budget or if you are a collector of consoles, buy the thing. If you want to play more complex and fun recent games, buy something new instead.
Sorry I wasn't specific enough,I meant is it still a good buy?
in reference to are they going to phase out the system
soon, and will new games still be available for it,I am on a
limited budget.

Yes.Playstation 2,still a good buy???
Last I checked, it was even outselling all the new consoles
I bought a cheap PS2 when I wasn't sure if I wanted to get back into consoles with the new ones. I'm glad I did. While I'll probably get a nextgen console in a while, it turns out I have a year or two of games to get through on the PS2 still, meaning PS3 will be cheap when I get it too. I think there's something to be said about being slightly behind on the gaming console hardware. For one thing, you know which one to buy cause it's matured by the time the decision comes... And all the hardware kinks are worked out. Not to mention it's way cheaper hehe.
I got 2 PS2s. Just because its "outdated", doesn't mean it doesn't have good games. I have the regular nintendo still, a sega, a gameboy, and an N64. Each console has its great games.
If theres games you like for the system, go with it. I'm not buying a playstation 3 nor X-Box 360 until the price drops a bit more.
Yeah, its still worth it. There are still games being released for it, but they aren't blockbusters or anything. You won't see any more well known A class games being released for it, and new releases will be phased out pretty soon I think as the PS3 is starting to pick up steam.
But some of my favourite games ever are on PS1 which is even more outdated than PS2... obviously. So being outdated doesn't mean squat. If its worth the money to you with the games you want to get, then its worth it. It is in no way akin to throwing your money out a window... since you can't get a PS2 for free, and if you can't afford a ps3 with ps2 compatibility then you'll need to spend that money to play those great games.
I have 3 PS1sOne died after a long life, although it still works barely. So I bought the second one, then my Dad was given one at work, so he gave it to me. Perfect condition too.
I also had 2 PS2s for about a week, but I was already planning on selling my original fat version to a friend when I bought the slimline one.

This is all you need to Know
It's all about gameplay preference really. Ask yourself these few things..
1.) Are you an online gamer?
2.) How many hours do you really want to put into your games?
3.) How much money do you have to spend?
Here's why...
1.) Playstation 2 is NOT an online system. It has online support, but the service is weak.
2.) Playstation 2's games are good, but alot of them are short. It really depends on what kind of gamer you are, considering different games have different lengths.
3.) This is the other thing... If you have alot of money to spend, try and dig up a Playstation 3 on Amazon or Ebay that has the backwards compatibility. Sure, it'll be $500.00 to $600.00 bucks, but if you have alot of money to spend, it's no problem.
One last thing. Playstation 2 sold about 31,000 consoles last month. That's alot.
So, if you're looking for a solid gaming experience, and you have NEVER played a Playstation 2, I honestly completely recommend it. Here's some game's for you to try out.
1.) Ratchet and Clank 1,2,3
2.) Jak and Daxter 1,2,3
3.) God of War 1,2
4.) Kingdom Hearts 1,2
5.) Final Fanasty (just pick one, theres like 5 out for the system)
6.) Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, San Andreas
7.) Mortal Kombat (there's like three on the system, pick one)
I'm sure you can find a shitload more.

I disagree on the game lengths. Thanks to online play a lot of new games one-player campaigns are being gimped. You can hardly ever find a FPS over 6 hours on new-gen systems. (As opposed to... well... doom... which was a bazillion hours). PS2 has a large amount of RPGs many accumulating over 60 hours of gameplay. Metal Gear solid 1,2 and 3 are games you're going to be compelled to play at least five times through.
As I said most new game are made for online play, and I'm sick of it. Give me 2D or pixilated games again PLX. >:{ Screw playing with other strangers, screw Halo 1,2 and 3, screw Xbox live.... bleck!
Old systems FTW.

lol you saved face congrats.
I think the PS2 is definitely a sound investment, providing you can get one cheaply. Due to it being out for a looong time, there's a huge back-catalogue of excellent games. For example:
-Final Fantasy XII
-Okami
-Resident Evil 4
-The Metal Gear Solid franchise
-GTA
-Gran Turismo 3
-Black
-Devil May Cry
... and that's just a sample. As well as that, you can pick up the games cheaply second-hand seeing as it's an old console. In short; get one.
*............*............*
Well,weighing the pros,and cons..I think I'll invest in the old system,It
should stll give me a couple of years of fun, while waiting for the new systems
prices to drop.I can find old games on Ebay for next to nothing.
Thanks for all the replies.![]()
For gamers, this is what I call "Living the sweet life a generation late." It consists of buying all the games and hardware from the previous generation and playing it because many of the best games are only 10-20 dollars and there are a lot of them available. It's not a bad strategy if you don't wish to pay top dollar for "Halo 3" or "Gears of War."
I'd say it's a damn good buy. Hell, I do it. I do have a 360 and a Wii, but god knows I'm going to pay 60 bucks for a game that will only last 5 hours. I'm a consistent borrower.
Surrender your flesh. We demand it.
It is still a great console. Other games worth checking out are the Hitman series - God of war II is probably the best game I have played on the console, excluding the MGS games. i am running through xbox games now, the variety isn't as wide but there are still some great gems such as ninja gaiden.

With so many levels? Maybe if you absolutely rush the crap out of it. Not to mention afterwards you just make your own levels and play 'em.![]()

you can do it un under 22![]()
If you're gonna buy a PS2, buy it at a real cheap price, like, $50-$150, then go buy Scarface, and Test Drive Unlimited.

IMO the PS2 the best overall console we had yet. Relatively cheap, Slim model is awsome, a plethora of games. This is coming from someone with a PS3.
