BLASPHEMY!!! HARRY POTTER RULZ!!!!! /me makes evil face at Wendy
Since every Harry potter fan is reading the book, I will say a big
spoiler now
Spoiler for Harry potter:
Seriously it is really poor and JK is a big sell out. Look at the five crap harry potter films, I also heard it is popular with adults(well if you can call them adults). People do say JK has got a generation of kids into books, however if you got into books because of Harry Potter then you have a poor taste of books. Anyone else not a fan off harry potter?

No Harry potter sucks, funny enough people will be scared to open this thread intill they read the book, which would take to tommorow.
So Harry Potter sucks and JK is a sell out. Saying that if you wait a day or in large lines to get the book, you need to find something better to do.

So what's wrong with sucking??
I was at the local Wal-Mart an hour ago, they have a sorting room all set up along with the hat and all that. Going all out this evening. Rumor has it Barnes & Noble is throwing an even bigger event. I kind of wish I was a rabid HP fan, it looks like a lot of fun!
you must be the change you wish to see in the world...

Damnit. Way to fucking spoil it for me.
Meh, I don't really care. The only books where I simply wouldn't read spoilers are mystery... Because that's, y'know, what they're about...?
In other news I didn't know they were out! Might have to scrounge up some cash and get it!

Meh. Harry Potter is meh.
Me likey Discworld. Books for adults, with much better plots, and added humour.
I don't actually know the end, so it could be true. My sister has got the book, I would read the end, however that means reading the book, which is a fate worse then getting beat up.Damnit. Way to fucking spoil it for me.
Yeah, but then they would proberly do something better with there lives, like not reading Harry Potter. Plus I'm pretty sure nearly everyone has seen one Harry Potter film.Seeker, you should delete this before it poisons the minds of people not-yet introduced to HP!!!!!!
Watch any Harry Potter film, then you will know that your a lucky person. Plus the ending of Harry Potter is always, Harry potter saved the day because he knew love and his enermies only knew hate.Meh, I don't really care. The only books where I simply wouldn't read spoilers are mystery... Because that's, y'know, what they're about...?
I don't really have a problem with the Harry Potter series itself, because at best it's just another less than mediocre fantasy, like Eragon.
What irks me though is how people will go about, "Oh, isn't Harry Potter like the best book ever! It's sooooo good." This makes me mad, becasue if they would take the trouble to actually read good fantasy they would throw their Harry Potter books in the trash can.
It's kind of equivalent to me going about claiming that so-and-so is obviously the best makeup brand, and obsessing about it even though I obviously know nothing about makeup.

Well, I've never read any HP books (and, for the record, don't necessarily plan on it) but I have to ask, Wendylove, how many Harry Potter books have you read?

Criss, you've forgotten a couple people :p

I couldn't agrre more Wendy. Harry Potter stopped "doing-it" for me when the second book was released. Number 3 was OK but I never got round to reading number 4 onwards. The films are even worse I think. Massive chunks are missed and Daniel Radcliffe gets up my ass. I've seen ther first 3 films, mainly to watch Emma Watson wave a magic wand around and fly about on a brromstick.
No, no. They just don't cut it for me. Now the Edge Chronicles are a different story:

Why make threads like this? Why don't you just let the fans enjoy the book?
I like the Harry Potter series a lot. Each book is very different in its own right, and I love the whole clue-dropping aspect. There's also undeniably a very large number of very different characters (way more variation than in the LotR trilogy, for example), and the books are funny and imaginative. I don't like the prose style in the first few books, but JKR's definitely improved since then. It's also a very warm series in most places, and generally pleasant to read.
Saying that the movies suck and therefore that the books suck is obviously a stupid thing to do. I've disliked all of the movies too, except Alfonso's, which was very good stylistically, I think.
I've got the third book in hardback, I got hooked on that series right at the start. No, no. They just don't cut it for me. Now the Edge Chronicles are a different story
Unfortunately the Twig trilogy is the only one worth reading... I only liked the first three because they introduce you to this incredibly mysterious world, and the way it's revealed gradually is great, right to the very end with the revelation of Riverrise (if that's what it was called...). But the others are very mediocre and repetitive and rather lose the point, which was the elusive atmosphere of the Edge.
Please be a little more careful about name calling and saying such rude things to other members of this forum. I hate to admit it...but stooping to that level sort of makes you look even worse than wendy, and that certainly isn't very easy to do.
It's interesting that the LOTR is brought up. I was discussing HP with my friend and though we both LOVE the HP books and movies, I mentioned that I missed the depth and awe and magnificence of the LOTR movies. And...as my friend said, it's obvious that J.R. Tolkien spent his life writing those books. HP is wonderful but I think JKR might have been a little rushed for deadlines and space and wasn't able to bring everything together as well as she could have. Though I still think the HP books are brilliant, I don't think JKR is a particularly stunning author or anything. She is just a master of plot, twists, creativity and storylines.
Who directed the Prisoner of Azkaban? That was my favorite movie out of the whole series so far. I think it was beautifully directed and the other movies are a bit more "hollywoodized" in feeling. There's just something about that 3rd movie that is magically creepy. It's wonderful.
Exactly how I felt; that's the one by Alfonso which I mentioned. He also directed Children of Men, which is fantastic. I really hope he does Book 7. They also had M Night Shyamalan as a possible, which would be quite a good choice; although Alfonso really a master of action scenes, which that book had lots of.
And I completely agree about JKR's qualities, too. :p
Directors:
1 - Sorceror's Stone: Chris Columbus
2 - Chamber of Secrets: Chris Columbus
3 - Prisoner of Azkaban: Alfonso Cuaron
4 - Goblet of Fire: Mike Newell
5 - Order of the Phoenix: David Yates
The OoTP was my favorite movie so far, then GoF, then PoA, then the other two. I think David Yates is directing the 6th film, Half-Blood Prince, too if I'm not mistaken. PoA was good, but there was too much trying to be creepy, and and not enough keeping up the storyline.
I thought it stuck close enough. The only thing lacking was the explanation of the history of Lupin and everything; and they did film that, I think, but the editors cut it. And people who read the book knew what was going on.
Ain't seen OotP yet, so I can't pass judgement. But yeah, same screenwriter and director, I hear.
PS Michael Gambon is a dipshit.
Yeah that was my biggest problem with the movie - it didn't even explain why Lupin's relationship with Harry was so important, and didn't explain the whole Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs thing. I think that was a very important point in the books, and instead we see stupid scenes of the Whomping Willow killing birds.
'ear 'ear
Yes!! Just after posting that I looked up who the director of POA was and I read about Alfonso. I notice he also did A Little Princess (absolutely and stunningly gorgeous movie!!!), Great Expectations (I'd have to see it again), and Children of Men (which is interesting because my friend and I commented on how we liked the cinematography and feel of the movie but the storyline was bleh).
HOLY EFFING HELL...you DID NOT just say M. Night Shyamalan...I'm completely obsessed and in love with this man and his movies haha. The man is a genius. I know his stuff gets crapped on alot...but I don't care. There's so much meaning and symbolism behind every shot and every single word uttered in his movies that most people simply cannot appreciate. If he directed ANY Harry Potter movie I'd probably have a spontaneous orgasm.
I would really love to see Alfonso direct more HP movies, but it seems doubtful. His was without a doubt the best. Although, I think GOF was amazing too and probably better storywise. Like I said...there's just something about that third movie that gives me chills in all the right ways haha...
