Thread: Horror movie buffs - give me some suggestions

I haven't seen The Descent! *goes to rottentomatoes*

How about The Ring? Scariest one for me... not sure why... Or The Eye, the original Chinese version.

Oh and Prom Night of course.. just kidding... Haven't seen it, but it looks so damn overdone and pathetic. Why do people keep spitting out garbage like that...

Edit: Ah wait wait, I have seen the Descent. I LOVED it. Saw it in theaters and yeah, it affected me.

A lot of people say The Mist is a good movie.
There is also another good horror movie that I don't think is very popular. It was a lot like The Descent. I saw it about a year ago and I forgot the name. It started like in a church or something a long time ago and there was a hole down somewhere. Then it goes to present time and a group of people have to go in it for some reason(I forgot), I think they might have been on an expedition. Then a guy goes out by himself and he gets attacked by something and the other people in the group hear him get hurt. They keep going and they find weird dragon type animal things that infect them with something. Does anyone know the name of this movie?

There are two grand champions of horror films-- The Exorcist and The Amityville Horror (original 1979 version). Those are very well written, acted, directed, filmed, everything, and they are as scary as movies get. That is because they are about supernatural, invisible forces of evil. I think that is many times freakier than some human with a chainsaw or a knife. The Shining (with Jack Nicholson, not Steven Weber ) is a phenomenal movie, but it is trippier than it is scary, in my opinion.

Another really good one is The Others with Nicole Kidman. Rosemary's Baby is pretty good, but it screws around too much and spends too little time on wig out parts. The ending makes it very much worth watching.

Other than the first Saw movie, there really aren't any other horror movies I think are even worth mentioning. But as for scary movies in general (Thrillers included, that is.), the 1992 Robert De Niro version of Cape Fear is a very good one. So is Deliverance, which probably lifts willing suspension of disbelief more than any other movie I have ever seen. It is very realistic and freaky, and it will suck you in big time.

Ooh I'll have to agree with Exorcist and Rosemary's baby. kingofclutch, I have no idea what movie that is... do you remember any actors from it?

Ok, I found what the movie was called. I searched for a while and I finally found it! Yay! It is called The Cave. I highly recommend it. It isn't cheesy and it has a pretty good storyline.

Watch "Ju-on" which is the japanese original The Grudge. Have you seen Alien?


Of course the original japanese "The Ring".


One which can swing either way is The Blair Witch Project. It's like very scary for some and completely boring for others.


I also found David Lynch's INLAND EMPIRE quite scary; but thats probably far too surreal and inpenetrable.

Ooooooohhhhhh yeah.... I forgot about those. The first three Omen movies are really awesome, especially the third one. They are about the life of the antichrist. In the first one, he is an evil little kid, and he is a real trip. In the second one, he is an evil teenager who learns that he is the antichrist. In the third one, he is a big time politician who learns of the birth of Christ and sets out to kill him while monks try to kill the antichrist (Damien) with the seven daggers that are the only means of killing the antichrist. Very good stuff.

The Orphanage is in cinemas at the moment and is supposed to be the scariest film since The Shining (which I wholeheartedly recommend - Misery is another good King adaption too).

I haven't seen it but it sounds very good. And since it's showing atm, you have no excuse...

I'd consider myself a horror movie enthusiast. I'm extremely picky though; and it takes a really good horror movie to make it in to my list of favorites.

Alien, Aliens, and Alien^3, but not Resurrection (#4) the last one was crap

Silence of the Lambs
28 Days Later, but not 28 Weeks Later

Oh the content is creepy as hell, don't get me wrong. I just don't think it would go into the genre of horror.

Scarier than any slasher movie I've ever seen. I'd say it fits the criteria of "It scared the crap out of me and just made me so uncomfortable" that she is looking for.

I really enjoyed the original "Carnival of Souls", starring Candace Hilligoss. It is definitely not for everyone and is not a gory horror movie, just kind of disturbing. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre...the grainy quality of it creeps me out (as does Leatherface and his family).

I'm also a big fan of "House of 1000 Corpses" and "The Devil's Rejects" as well. You can find collections of old Italian gothic and vampire horror films at places like Suncoast or probably even Best Buy (the "Devil Worship Collection" is good...don't let the name deter you, buying it doesn't mean you worship Satan... )

Most serious horror films created in the 60's and 70's creep me out, especially the foreign movies.

Hmm. Fair enough.

I know it's been said, but I definitely back the support for the Nightmare on Elm Street series. Have you seem them all yet, Kichu? The earliest ones (maybe 1-4, 5 at the most) are the best, but the entire series is good stuff. It's got some of the most disturbing images ever (in the fantastic sense, not the quasi-realistic and over-the-top gore in movies like Hostel and The Hills Have Eyes.)

Fun fact: Nightmare on Elm Street 3 - Dream Warriors is probably the single most contributory movie that helped me develop dream control (before the Matrix, of course!) It's the first one where the characters actually started using dream control "powers" to kick Freddy's ass. Good shit.

Haha, I know what you mean Oneironaut. I was watching that movie a few days ago with a few friends, and whenever the children would do something to fight back against Freddy, I would jump up and be like "that's lucid dreaming! They're using dream control!" over and over. Man.

I could kick Freddy's ass The first and the third ones are the best.
