Name: Joel Plaskett
Hometown: Halifax, Nova Scotia (my hometown)
Genre: Indie rock
Two of my favourite songs by him:
Ignore the video to this one, he doesn't have an official video for it....
Alrighty. Speak your mind about your favorite local band, and if you don't have one... maybe a band that isn't 100% mainstream. That means no Fall Out Boy, Lil Wayne, Keith Urban, etc etc.
Any genre, any city. Just, name the city the band is from (or state), their name, genre, and maybe a youtube video of their music or a myspace link!
I'll start with three of my favorite bands, starting with least mainstream.
Name: Everything Zen (or E-Z)
Hometown: Cleveland, Ohio
Genre: Alternative Rock
Song: Don't Waste Your Breath (Live)

Name: Alarum
Hometown: Melbourne, Australia
Genre: Tech/Jazz Thrash Metal
In the same style as Atheist and Cynic, but unique at the same time. They're not known outside of metal circles, but if you're a fan of extreme metal you've probably heard of them before.
They don't have the best live sound, and it's made even worse because of the nature of the recording, but all things considered it's still a good one.
This is a song from "Eventuality..." If you can get past the vocals and you enjoy technical metal you should get something out of it.
I actually don't like that second song. All of the songs from their 2002 Promo were re-recorded for this album and they lost some magic in my opinion. And actually, this track was re-recorded from a previous unreleased form for the Promo, and i didn't like it on much the Promo either (though the rest of the tracks on said Promo are unbelievably awesome)Anyway, it's the only one of the two non-live clips i could find that represents the band well, so there it is.
edit: forgot the little format at the start, sorry

They're not 100% mainstream, but they are played sometimes on local radio stations. I don't know how good the quality of the videos will be because I didn't watch them. The SAFETYSUIT video is an acoustic version.
Name: Framing Hanley
Hometown: Nashville, Tennessee
Genre: Alternative/Rock

Song: Hear Me Now
Name: SAFETYSUIT
Hometown: Nashville, Tennessee
Genre: Rock

Song: Someone Like You
I've only really been impressed by a couple of the bands from my area, one of which is Sparky. Certainly not mainstream, but Saskatchewan isn't really known in Canada for its music scene anyway.
Name:Sparky
Hometown:Colonsay, Saskatchewan
Genre:Funk, Metal
Myspace:http://www.myspace.com/sparkymusic
Song:Bonus
There are a few others, but Sparky is the one I was most impressed by so that's good enough for now. Maybe more later.
Name:Cambridime
Hometown:North Ogden, Utah
Genre:Metalcore

They just got a new drummer and haven't had any practices with him yet so, yeah. But I like them, they're pretty good.

Cobra Starship!
I wouldn't call them local but they are alternative and not very well known. WOOO going to a concert next month for them and placking like 6 friends in my car cause the tickets are cheap.
My Internet Radio Station - My avatar shows whether its online or not. Usually have some pretty good rock or metal going.
My Polyphasic Sleep Blog | Dream Log | Hosted Naps, Audio Files, and Apps
Armcannon
http://www.myspace.com/armcannon
Progressive / Metal / Glam
Ghostbusters Metal Theme
Favorite Song: Zelda Dozen Elf Death Gel
ARMCANNON can be described in a very narrow manner as a video-game cover band. However that would only be half the story. Armcannon plays original arrangements of a variety of nostalgic and (for lack of a better word) awesome music. Each piece is intricately arranged and have been described as "orchestral" on more than one occasion.
