Thread: Rare and Obscure bands

I'm not sure about what kind of music these bands play, but they're good.

Nerf Herder: These guys have decent songs and I like the vocalist. They have fun songs like "I've Got a Boner for Christmas" and "Santa has a Mullet". They are the guys that play the Buffy the Vampire Slayer theme song.

Abandoned Pools: These guys are also alright. They have the kinds of songs that make you feel like a depressed teen again. They also play the Clone High theme.

Cradle of Filth: British death-metal band. They're pretty decent, some of their music is fucked up, there's one with a woman screaming in the bakcground and their music videos are really fucked up, like people getting their hearts ripped out and women playing violin without the violin, so their bleeding from the wrists into a bath tub, lotsa that crazy shite. My fav song I believe is called "Ghost in the Fog".

System of a Down: One of my fav bands. They kick ass even though they only have 3 albums, their best song so far is "Chop Suey".

The Pixies: The best rock band of the late 80s and early 90s, they broke up in 1991 I think, they got back together just this year. They have some really weird songs but I would consider "Where is my Mind?", "Wave of Mutilation", "Monkey Gone to Heaven", "Gigantic" and "Bone Machine" as some of their best songs.

Streetlight Manifesto: An awesome ska-core band, supurb bass and horns, perfect voice to match em, and a sad, sad theme of their first album "Everything went numb".

Definately one of my all time favorites.

Crap, I forgot one.

Angelcorpse: Possible the most intense death metal band ever. Insane guitar solos and double-bass work. Absolutely check out "The Inexorable" as well as their other albums. But "The Inexorable" kicks so much ass, especially because of the song "Wolflust".

Darkthrone? Cradle of Filth? are you kidding? plenty of people know about those bands

Yeah, I'll admit that Darkthrone doesn't really belong on the list. But SOAD and the Pixies don't belong either.

I'll add

Mr. Bungle- Mike Patton's (of Faith No More) first band which covers just about all genres (blues, heavy metal, swing, ska, circus music, porn groove, rock opera, middle eastern music). The can be a little hard to digest at first (as they blend genres and at times can seem "all over the place), so if you check them out, I'd suggest their more-mellow "California", or "Disco Volante".

Fantomas- Patton's more recent band. A lot more experimental, but harder-music.

Old Modest Mouse is awesome, agreed.

definitely a good band.... sure you have heard of medeski martin and wood then huh? If not, I think you would like it... similar style to galatic.

System of a Down is a pretty well known band...haha I've actually heard Chop Suey "When angels diserve do DDDDIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEE!! WEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLGHHHHHHHHHHHH" haha, my friend listens to that stuff when were in the car I can't help but laugh, especially when he plays Slipknot.

Anyways, they aren't that un-heard of, but not a lot of people know about them, Scorpions, they are the greatest band EVER.

A couple of my favourites, you should give them a try:

Hawksley Workman - Canadian singer/songwriter with a hell of a good voice. Kinda quirky. Writes and plays ALL instruments on his CDs, which I like. Live shows are OUTSTANDING. I recommend this guy for anyone who's sick of the same old shit!

Hope of the States - British group, EXCELLENT MUSIC. Kinda dark and Coldplay-esque, but much much better. I strongly recommend you guys all check this band out.

The Waterboys, A scottish folk/pop group, formed in the eighties by a scotsman named Mike Scott, they never have the same line up!! Makes for some very interesting albums.
Most famous song is probably 'Whole of the Moon'
Best albums for me are 'This is the Sea' and 'Universal Hall' (that came out two years ago.)

The Immaculate Fools
These were around a long, long time ago, and i got into them totally and completely by accident.
The band is not going anymore, but the lead singer still plays the odd gig, and is a friend of a friend. He came to play for the residents one time, and i got hooked on the music, and my friend lent me one of his cds.
I don't think you can buy them now, you might be able to get them on amazon...
they're another sort of folk/pop band. I like them, but they are unusual.

FLYING STEPS
These guys have only released one album called "B-Town". The whole album is nothing but Electronic Breakdance. They are probably more famous for their breakdancing, but this album is fantastic. It has an excellent mix of funk, hip-hop, and breakdance with an electronic edge.

The tracks will sound pretty similar when you you first listen to them, but they soon start distinguishing themselves with repeated listening.

The best track on the album...

WE ARE ELECTRIC - I had to type that in capitals because it is the best song on the album and my favourite song of all time. It's extremely upbeat and has a fantastic funky drumloop. This song is best with the bass turned up. The contrast of the bassy percussion and high pitched melody is perfect. The song builds to a fantastic main chorus after which it goes into a funky subchorus, with stab guitars and perfectly timed scratches and vocals. My description can't really do it justice, so do yourself a favour and listen to it!!

BOMFUNK MC'S
These guys aren't too popular in the UK and US (at least to my knowledge. If i'm wrong, someone please correct me). Their music is hard to categorise. It's a mixture of hip-hop, funk, breakdance, electronic and rock (and several other genres thrown in there).

Their new album "Reverse Psychology" is FANTASTIC. EVERY song on the album is a gem. The best songs are the title track, the single "No Way In Hell", opening track "Hypnotic", "Foxy Lady" and the extremely funky song "Track Star". There's even a reggae style song called "Obvious" and even a song about mosquitoes!!

Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - The most passionate band I have ever encountered. Their music is mysterious. This orchestra's instruments are made of passion and pure emotion. Knowing their mentality, they would prefer I not give you an opinion and simply give the you the choice to listen to their music (for free, off their website):

A Silver Mt. Zion - Associated with Godspeed, this orchestra is a little more depressing and somber. The album, "he has left us alone but shafts of light sometimes grace the corner of our bedrooms" was the favorite of mine during my depression - it simply personifies loneliness and sadness, lost, and isolation. I warn those of this orchestra - it is like listening to a man sing on his death bed.

Explosions in the Sky - Another great orchestra that simply plays what happiness is. The album "The World Is Not a Cold Dead World" was my favorite for a long, long time. Beautiful.

The Swords Project - Beautiful.. I can't say more.

Those are mine..

Gob: A rocking punk band from BC. They have many hits like "I Hear You Calling" and "Give Up the Grudge". They have sweet guitar lines and the drumming is crazy. It makes some sweet listenings. Thier soft hard switch makes everything they have new and exciting. My favorite CD is "The World According To Gob" and my favorite song is "144".

Gorilla and Monkey: They actually dress up in a Gorilla and Monkey suit. The animals are wearing underwear. It is crazy how well they play in the costumes.
