Thread: The recent death of Hunter S Thompson

LOVED his stuff.

I read Fear and Loathing in college like 10 times. I had 3 copies (but that's because my best friend spilled coffee on one copy when she borrowed it, so I bought another copy, but then she bought me another copy to replace it, plus returned the coffee-copy, which was still readable ). I liked Gonzo Papers too, but not as much.

It's a shame he won't be writing anymore, but damn, I don't want the man to be in pain. Then again, I wonder if all that drug-use messed him up enough to change his brain chemistry enough to lead him to committ suicide. Just a thought.

Either way, love the man's work.

I was also pained to hear of Hunter's suicide...it didn't surprise me considering his condition. He was a brilliant writer and journalist and anyone that can glorify the use of drugs like he has, definitely gets a thumbs up.

Fear and Loathing is still my favorite movie. I was devasted to hear of Hunter's death...but I can't wait for the Rum Diary to come out...I think this summer? Another Jonny Depp/Hunter masterpiece I hope.

I have read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"ˆ and "The Great Shark Hunt" ˆ I loved both of these books....I hope to read more. I can find his books in any bookstore also because here in Kentucky he always has a section devoted to him, since he's from Louisville. I think it's just like him to want to have his ashes shot out of a cannon...Johnny Depp is picking out the cannon...

He was having chronic pains though, so it doesn't surprize me. He'd always indicated that when life wasn't fun he wouldn't stick around for the rest of it. Still....I hated to see him go.[/b]

I understand what you are saying but I don’t think that his pain was the reason behind his suicide! He talked about it for years that he wanted to kill himself instead of waiting around to die in a faceless hospital room with people who don’t give a fuck about his work! I think he was happy with his life and thought it the perfect time to end it! I wouldn’t be sad by his death, he surfed the wave for along time and still came up without the wave smashing towards the rocks! His power and amazing ability to uncover the darkness in our society will never be reproduced!

If you guys like Thompson you should check out the Criterion R1 edition of Fear and Loathing! There is a greatly insightful interview with Thompson in a documentary called "On the Road to Hollywood" that was done by the BBC in 1978. Depp totally hits the nail on the head in the movie!

I had no idea that Hunter S Thompson was dead. Im working alot now so dont watch too much TV and sadly dont get to spend too much time on this wonderful website anymore so I didnt hear anything about it. I first watched fear and loathing when I was 8 or 9. Quiet awhile before first expirementing with drugs. I always loved the movie but never got around to reading the book. Until last year I borrowed it from my friend Mikey (Mickeys_Elbow). I couldnt put the book down until it was done. Thompson is easily one of the greatest journalists to have lived. And definently is the supreme Gonzo Journalist. It broke my heart to read this news. People just cant write like that anymore.

Well, perhaps life just wasn't fun for him anymore. I know he wasn't depressed.....I think it's because he had been in pain. He just couldn't live comfortably......I just picked up a copy of "Songs of the Doomed". Can't wait to read it.
