Pre 2000 games can still kick major balls.
Half life 1. Rocks.
Theme Hospital. Rocks.
Blood. Playing it right now. It rocks.
Duke Nukem 3d. It just rocks.
Red Alert 2. What can I say? It rocks.
Raptor: call of the Shadows. It rocks, major balls.
Edit: 'Deus ex', it is from 2000, but it rocks so hard, it's just cool.

Well, you only need two games from that era, Fallout 1 & 2.
well, I've played all of these![]()
SimAnt and Theme Hospital are definitely two of my favorites from this list! I might get back out Fallout 1 & 2. Actually I've never heard of Herzog Zwei. I'll check that out.
wait... Herzog Zwei: Platforms: Mega Drive/Genesis
I said computer games, haha.

XWing vs. TIE Fighter or perhaps the original TIE Fighter.
Still two of my favorite games.
Oh, and Age of Empires I and II.

X-Wing vs. Tie fighter is pretty good, I suppose.

I recommend:
Harwar
Skyroads
Gravity Well
Castle of the Winds
SU-25 Stormovik
Especially Harwar. That game's cool.
Edit
By the way, there's a place to download all of those games at the bottoms of their respective pages.

I've tried Hardwar. I didn't like it very much, it's one of those games with a pretty much dead community and an also rather dead single player.

I was ten years old in 1982, when video games really took off, and I played the 70's video games that preceded the electronic screens, so I've been there for the whole history. I think the coolest video game of all time is Rastan. I haven't heard a word about it in ages, but it was bad ass. My next favorite was Ghosts and Goblins. I also loved the original Super Mario Brothers. U.N. Squadron was a big obsession I had for a while. And I have always been a huge fan of Ms. Pacman. The Atari 2600 games were simple and primitive, but they were great. Check out Defender, Frogger, and Space Invaders.
Worms takes the cake.
Fire! Oh no! Whoopsie..... Dam now I wanna play that game again =/.
Red Alert 2 definitely. You'll need IPX if you want to play it over LAN though and it's a hassle to install it for XP and Vista's gotten rid of it all together. You can use a program called Kali to simulate an IPX network.
Liero, worms, except in real time. Original Liero was probably better then Liero X the spin off although it has less options and no networking.

Anyone play around with emulators/mods?
Mech Warrior 2. All the way.
Red alert is awesome as well. Although red alert 2 is not pre-2000. At least it doesn't seem that old...
I never played the second MechWarrior, but the third one is my favorite by far. Number four messed a bunch of stuff up. The controls weren't smooth, the overheating didn't work as well, it was harder to use, and generally not pleasant to play.
The third one seemed to be the perfect blend of graphics and playability.
MechAssault is just an insult to the old MechWarrior games...
