WoW is much better than cocaine or heroin. And cheaper too.
But really, the choice is between WoW and real life activities. Seems like a pretty easy choice to me. But we both know you're gonna choose WoW no matter what anyone says.
Okay, so I had WoW about a year or two ago, and had way too much fun/no fun. It was a ton of fun, but ultimately slow and, well, slow. Well, maybe that is because I literally created (and deleted) dozens and dozens of low level characters, my main Mage (Aydenn) is about 38 or so.
It is just SO TIME CONSUMING. I have work to finish and a life to have! I'm not saying it will interfere with my ability to get things done, only to eat the precious little (yet sizable amount) of free time I have. I can plan around raids and the like, but in general, this game needs you there every day. Guilds, for example: The large ones usually are falling apart and are more loose collections of people. The small ones (the ones I prefer) usually have hardcore playtimes, say, almost every afternoon you'll be logging on.
My main problem is that if I'm into something, I am INTO it. If I play Halo, (which I do) I have to be the best. I have to know where all the weapons are, the best tactics, maps, and enjoy hardcore playgroups. I still play for fun, and enjoy every game win or lose, but I have to make that effort. I have to be on top of all the new releases and news. Now, with WoW, there is SO MUCH CONTENT that it blows me away. I have to literally MINE through expansion packs/content to get to "where it's at." Every "new" dungeon for me has been done by everyone else a zillion times (Blackwing lair for example) and I am HARD pressed to get a raid together, let alone be getting it together/playing the raid/organizing and planning future raids, not that I can't, just that it SUCKS my life from my soul like a plunger in a toilet. My fear is the content is piling up on me and I am seriously, seriously missing out. And I have the equivalent of 50 million miles of leveling/content in general ahead of me and the landscape is a barren wasteland since all the people are in Draenor, and when I get there, the are (going to be) in Northrend soon, and when I get THERE, it will all be OLD again, and I MISSED OUT on the excitement and discovery. I love the Undercity, for example. But knowing how OLD it is to everyone else and (presently) people-less makes me nauseous.
So I really want to play, to get some of that old Elwynn magic again, and (eventually) rejoin civilization wherever they will be when I catch up, but to do so will involve flaying my soul. Help?

Look, I played WoW for two and a half years. How was I ever able to stop? After a while, watching all those parkour videos on youtubue gets to you. It ended up with me saying "Geeze, I really want to do that.." So I did. I started going to the gymnastics center on Teusdays to learn flips and rolls and spins, I started running at the park, I'd swim a little farther out at the beach than previously, and hike mile after mile of winding mountain trail. Generally speaking, I got in shape, and loved the benefits of that so much more that I dropped WoW all together. You can level a virtual character in a video game, or you can level yourself in real life. If you want to quit, there's nothing better to do, in my opinion, than to find something else that allows you to interract with your realworld environment, and hopefully give you some other real world skill.
Have you ever wanted to learn to do something new? Go do that, right now. While you still have a soul left.

SAVE YOURSELF
I left WOW to focus on my artwork and I can't even look back now
where as before the idea of not gaming for just a few days was painful, I'm finding I have sooooooo much time in the day to really do more important things.
and while I understand for some people WOW is a social thing for them, I find my friends TALK MORE, or at least talk about more meaningful things outside of WOW. so I try to pry them away from it as much as possible as well
it is a fun game. but if you really need to stop playing WOW, or if you are too obsessive to play in smaller amounts-- but need a game fix - go to yahoo. play some casual games here and there. it'll help curve the appetite for gaming.

Purchase Half-Life and download the mod called Natural Selection.
It's really meant for serious gamers...so if you want seriousness, go play that.
I happen to be conditioning for Parkour right now! I almost have landings down and can move onto rolls, and then go on to vaults and run-ups. Actually, it wasn't YouTube that inspired me, as amazing as they are, it was actually Altair that sparked my interest...
Anyway, as to WoW, contrary to seemingly popular belief you ARE swaying me in disfavor of WoW...

well the thing is that you have to balance between the two. If you really want to get out of wow set up a schedule between work, friends, family and Wow. Slowly cutting Wow out of the schedule. Also try thinking what else you can do with that $15 a month.

Think about it like this. WoW is so retarded people actually believe the word "train" originates from it.

Okay, shifting the focus a little, what are the ways that you have managed your playtimes?
EDIT: Adding more: WoW is very much a social obligation for me, because I HATE leaving people hanging and the like, but playing WoW without aving that social interaction is pretty pointless. I have had cooperative, friendly and motivated guilds put together only to fall apart because I could not be there sometimes. When I stopped, and then came back nobody knew me at all anymore, and they obviously were lvl 60+ while I was still in the Arathi Highlands.

How I shifted my playtime is picking up a new hobby. Mine was paintball. You should try something new.
That is my strategy right now. I get a good start on a hobby I have and when I can't think of anything but that hobby throw WoW in there for free time. I wouldn't call my Parkour a hobby in that regard as it would not be smart to ask myself to decide between running and playing a game.
But I am versing this thread as if I was addicted; I am not. I am simply trying to curtail addiction. I firsthand know that sucking feeling of dependence and missingoutness that this game emits. Luckily I stopped before I got really hooked. Now, I am trying to head into this with a better sense of direction. Not all WoW players are addicted. Millions enjoy it as a healthy part of their weekly routine. So I will keep my guard up and everything should go fine. Visiting www.wowdetox.com was sobering for me, and really let me know how this game feeds off your soul if you let it.
I would like to enjoy this game like I enjoy Halo, nice, casual playtimes that don't have me experiencing longing and nostalgia every minute away from the game. Some of my obligations are really tempting to forget for anything else, even checkers or something.
I think I might treat it as a personal rather than social thing. So let the expansion packs come, I can take my time enjoying my journey and leaving the hardcore players to their thing. Taking it slow and easy will be a nice change to hardcore grinding to level up to your odd level. Maybe when I get higher up I might get more serious about guilds and content...

When I wanted to overcome my addiction to Runescape, I just looked at it like this: If I could put all this time into training my "virtual self" just think what if I could train my "real self" that would actually be worth while, grab some weights and get your strength level up, or go for a run and get your speed level up, look at your life as if it is your new MMORPG, and your wasting your life on it, and not just for the pixels.
I personally used mine for different exercise routines, and also Lucid Dreaming of course.
Currently training to master WILD.
LDs: 300+ probably
I agree with the others that you should choose a hobby to distract you from WoW, but, with saying that you can still play casually as you do with halo.
I stopped playing Runescape all the time by consuming myself in a new hobby and at the moment I just play RS casually instead which allows me to have time for other, more important things.
Try to get yourself back into LDing if you haven't been trying very hard lately or commit more time to your parkour.
Anyway, good luck with kicking your WoW addiction.
LD count: 75
(17 DEILDs, 54 DILDs, 4 WILDs)

Dump WoW for FPS. Don't bother playing any MMO's unless they are a MMOFPS. FPS is safer, less addictive, and you can take your stress out pretending the other guys are the people you hate. Become pro at fps and become pro at hating.
Just play halo, it's a decently awesome game, and it takes far less time. When you stop playing, you really stopped playing. There isn't a virtual world still running wherein you can lag behind / still have to do stuff.
That, and owning people in shooters is far more fun then by clicking on them once in 3rd person perspective.

If you keep playing WoW, this is going to happen to you.
You'll be playing the part of the hippo, and the lions will be played by.. lions.
Want to keep playing?
Again, if I play without moderation.

Become great at LD and play in your sleep. Problem solved... you can spend the remaining 1/3rd of your life playing WoW![]()
You're just going to have to realise that it's sad you're playing so much and it costs alot. Then you'll realise "Hey this is crap, I need to get out more."
Then from that day on, you'll leave it behind!

I played WoW on and off for 2 years across several level 70s, a handful of servers and a smattering of high end raiding guilds. I have a lot of fond memories, but I wasted so much of my life in that game and I wish I could take it back.
Go cold turkey and find something else to do with your time. Immediately after you quit you will be BORED with your life, and won't know what to do with yourself. I started going to the gym 3 days a week, and walking for 30-45 minutes a night with my dog. Read more books. Challenge your mind a little more by researching things that interest you, like science, religion, music or art.
Do anything else, but WoW.
