The Mayans prophesied that the world will end in 2012? I thought it was just supposed to be some sort of great change.

If you believe the Mayan's "prophecy" of the world ending, or Planet X/Nibiru coming to smash into us, or a Solar Flare melting us, read these articles.
Here's a nice little quote to think about before you read.
No Doomsday In 2012"…when a calendar comes to the end of a cycle, it just rolls over into the next cycle. In our Western society, every year 31 December is followed, not by the End of the World, but by 1 January. So 13.0.0.0.0 in the Mayan calendar will be followed by 0.0.0.0.1 - or good-ol' 22 December 2012, with only a few shopping days left to Christmas." - Excerpt from Dr Karl's "Great Moments in Science".
No Planet X
Planet X Is Not Nibiru
No Killer Solar Flare

"You do not really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother." ~ Albert Einstein
"The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside." ~ Allan Bloom - The Closing of the American Mind
A great change indeed, we'll no longer be bothered by 2012 crap.
- Are you an idiot?
- No sir, I'm a dreamer.

I think there are a lot of really interesting ideas about what might happen on 2012. Obviously no one is certain what will happen, but they're interesting to consider none the less.

How are they interesting to consider? Personally, I find things interesting when they're grounded in reality. For example, I find it more interesting to contemplate the implications of Moore's Law than to try to imagine what would happen if there was suddenly a computer invented that was millions of times more advanced than everything else. Fairy tales like 2012 aren't interesting at all, at least not going by my definition. Hell, 2012 isn't even a fairy tale. Fairy tales at least had lessons to teach. The 2012 crap is just fluff that serves to keep people's minds off their boring lives.

I don't see why anyone should believe 2012 prophecies anymore than any of these. They've got the same amount of evidence in all of them, pretty much no evidence at all. Most of them have failed, as you can see we've passed 1990 - majority of 2008.

Late-year 2012 will be a great time to pick up some great deals on the stock exchange. I know I'll definitely have some cash tucked away to pick up the run away stock crashes as the media hypes up the 2012 scaremongering. They never can resist a good apocalypse.

Do you have any idea what that statement says about you?Originally Posted by Alextanium

Plus, the sun will be directly in between the earth and the center of the galaxy. How they knew where the center of the galaxy was without modern technology, I don't think anyone truly knows. That being said, they were aware of something we are not currently aware of. I'm not sure about whether or not we can find out where the galaxy's center is without technology though, so I'm open to information on that. Please enlighten me
But hey, one more precession out of the earth. That's pretty cool.

It's pretty easy to determine where the galactic plane is. You can do it by looking up at the sky on a clear night and seeing the band of stars, the Milky Way. The area with the largest density of stars is the centre bulge of our galaxy.

You don't need technology to make this assertion. Hell you don't even need a telescope. Just an eyeball.
And I'm not entirely convinced of the truth of the bolded statement above. Even if that were the case, nothing metaphysical or fantastical is going to occur. The Sun is still going to rise on the 22nd, for a lot of disappointed people I might add.
Probably that I understand principles of economics and social hysteria, but I'm sure that's not what you are implying.
I don't think critical thinking means what you think it means.

I only remember hearing (off of Discovery channel again, hah) that because of our solar system's position in the spiral, there was no way to be sure of our orientation in relation to the center. I may absolutely be wrong. I have the great displeasure of living in Los Angeles, so the whole "clear night" scenario is never going to happen (not while I'm still living here, anyways).
But here's my bigger question: Is the sun going to be dead-on-accurate exactly in between our sun and the black hole in the center of the galaxy? If that's the case, then we probably should be giving the Mayans a little more credit than that they just have a damn accurate calendar.
There is plenty of ways to be sure. We can calculate the distances to stars with a high degree of accuracy. Get the distances to enough stars and you can do some trigonometry to figure out where you are in relation to the rest.
It doesn't matter where in the spiral you are - if you can see the centre, you have a direct line of sight to it. Unless you're referring to whether the planet lies on the exact center of the Galactic Plane, in which case someone smarter than you or I seems to have figured it out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galactic_plane
And from the other wiki I posted a few up:
andThe fact that the Milky Way divides the night sky into two roughly equal hemispheres indicates that our Solar System lies close to the galactic plane. The Milky Way has a relatively low surface brightness, making it difficult to see from any urban or suburban location suffering from light pollution.
The Apex of the Sun's Way, or the solar apex, is the direction that the Sun travels through space in the Milky Way. The general direction of the Sun's galactic motion is towards the star Vega near the constellation of Hercules, at an angle of roughly 60 sky degrees to the direction of the Galactic Center. The Sun's orbit around the Galaxy is expected to be roughly elliptical with the addition of perturbations due to the galactic spiral arms and non-uniform mass distributions. In addition the Sun oscillates up and down relative to the galactic plane approximately 2.7 times per orbit. This is very similar to how a simple harmonic oscillator works with no drag force (damping) term. Due to the higher density of stars close to the galactic plane, these oscillations often coincide with mass extinction periods on Earth, presumably due to increased impact events.
It takes the Solar System about 225–250 million years to complete one orbit of the galaxy (a galactic year), so it is thought to have completed 20–25 orbits during the lifetime of the Sun and 1/1250th of a revolution since the origin of humans.

Internet tough guy detected.
I'm yet to see this from her.Critical thinking consists of mental processes of discernment, analysis and evaluation. It includes possible processes of reflecting upon a tangible or intangible item in order to form a solid judgment that reconciles scientific evidence with common sense.

Justin those people don't know a thing about what's supposed to happen, they're getting all the conspiracies crossed.

Alextanium and Omnius Deus I just want to say thank you for your contributions. Every time a post of this nature is made we look better and better. Simply because of the vast and generalized inaccurate statements against us which borders on unjustified ridicule.
While it tends to make you look worse unfortunately, that is not overall what is important to us. Nothing personal but rather the ignorance becomes the problem to face, together with getting the information out there. Exposing that ignorance is what we need so it's nothing personal.
Thank you in particular for saying such outlandish things as you don't consider anything I have posted as critical thinking. Or that we are a waste of life or bullies ['internet tough guys']. And anything else mindlessly stated about either me or someone else that was obviously insensitive and juvenile.
This isn't to say you are not capable of more than this. But these sorts of regressive negative assumptions aimed with whatever it is, a general hatred or a misunderstanding. Only cause a further momentum forward for our cause of awareness and civil conduct. Let the truth speak for itself and that is exactly what is happening as it is our fundamental intention. So let the best intention win. Anything else would be 'getting your conspiracies crossed'.
The proper thing to do is name which conspiracies are crossed impersonally and why. The improper approach is to pin a vague statement of incompetence on a group of people personally. Without giving any details or reason for stating why that is the case. That becomes the useless thing.

Omicron then you are in the same boat as them Since you didn't give a reason. Your response to my inquiry in pm has yielded this which is obviously not satisfactory.
That is why I said responses like this have a tendency to make us look better due to the lack of justification. You seem to be grasping at straws here to come up with a realistic reason to disregard people's credibility. Desire of will is not enough it must make sense why you think someone lacks credibility. If it isn't logical it becomes a fictional part of your imagination. Ofcourse it isn't about us it is about authority of the truth. Your reasoning doesn't cut it when it is based on nothing more than your subjective desire to exercise a right of imagination and claim that as evidence.Originally Posted by Omicron

The problem is I didn't say that you made it up. It becomes self evident 'me' is not a reason. Funnily enough that was the excuse you gave to dismiss the info. That is why I said you have no real justification.
Play word games if you want. Go ahead and did a deeper grave. We can create another better saint.
