That is one of the reasons I say Islamic fundamentalists are far worse than Christian fundamentalists at this point in history.

In Iran, it is illegal to be gay, and the penalty for homosexual behavior is death. That is death at the hands of the government, not just fringe nuts out in society.

Iran is a sovereign nation. They can do whatever they want to their citizens. It's none of the rest of the world's business.

The government of Iraq, installed courtesy of the United States of America, does not kill people for being gay. But the government of Iran does. We might be paying them a visit soon.

In Iraq I'm not certain but sodomy was illegal...and repeated offense punishable by death though no know cases of death penalty are known. However increasing occurences of police/militia murders of homosexuals and transgendered people are spreading.

I didn't see anything in the law specifically for lesbians though. Rest assured however they are being targeted as well by these homophobic officers.

I am not sure what the Hussein regime's policy on homosexuality was. They killed their citizens over pretty much anything, so killing homosexuals would not be such a surprise. The new government policy does not have an agenda of killing homosexuals, though some of the people who work in the government do since they are fresh out of Hussein society. The upcoming generations will tend to not be so much like that.

Yeah. The law that made sodomy illegal was made to appease some religious nuts.

I guess it wasn't apparent but when I use the word "was" it was because I was trying to show that it "was" illegal but isn't now, or atleast isn't necessarily still illegal I can't seem to get a definitive answer from searching the web.. However

lol I'd help you to wipe out all of the homophobes in iraq, those poor gay bi and trans iraqis still have it bad, the hussein regime was bad, but i don't think much has changed in terms of sexual orientation acceptance in the middle east.

Well I wouldn't necessarily kill "all" the homophobes...I mean some are just annoying without being dangerous.

What made me particularly revolted by the story here is that when a 16 yr old boy was kidnapped for ransom, when they found out he was gay, he was raped every day for 15 days...and he is too afraid to tell anyone because then people would know he had sex with men...and who the hell knows what his family and the law officials would do.

"Militias are reportedly threatening families of men believed to be homosexual, stating that they will begin killing family members unless the men are handed over or killed by the family," it said.

"the biggest threats right now are from militia organizations, who will attack and actually sometimes kill gay men and women."

What on earth are you talking about. Thuggery has no place in our society. It's solved. Didn't you hear the politicians.

Seeing as Minervas has distracted everyone from the point of this thread I'm going to bring things back on track.(WOO HOO)

So, the fact that gay's, bi's,trans, etc are being mistreated in The Middle East is horrid, but sadly enough there will be serious prejudices being held towards minority groups for quite a while.
Even after The Middle East starts to accept gays,etc, minority groups will probably always be used as a target of sorts by governments, extremist groups, etc for a long time to come.

And, maybe its just me, but people do have an inclination(sp?) to dislike minority groups purely because they're different. (the treatment of African-Americans in the very recent past, gays in the present, etc)

The past(and the present) are example's of that...(Holocaust, slavery, etc)

I feel so sorry for them, and then I here in the states complain about the discrimination we face here at home, its nothing compared to the middle east, I should be glad im bi and just not care about what people think, cause I probably won't get blown up or executed for it, unless I lived in Iraq.

Black People mug white people, robb liquor stores. Gays createed AIDS, Asians preform better then white people at intellectual type stuff so they steal ld jobs from white ppl. Jews control the worlds media and horde money for themselves. Native Americans are living in the Past. Slavic people are shrewed and untrustworthy. Irish are lazy violent drunks.
