Hmm I wonder if an attack will happen, now that they said this, Maybe they will LET an attack happen on purpose, so they keep the white house.
Sad sad day in the world.

Just wondering what people think about:
1. How much of an advantage another attack would be for McCain
2. How big of a faux pas this statement was
3. What this says about GOP strategy past and present
Certainly fear is what has been a major driving force for the Republican party since 9/11. How much of that fear do you think is justified, and how much is manufactured for political gain?

I think what he said is a fact, but he shouldn't have said it since of course his statement would be spun to mean that he is hoping for a terrorist attack. My big goal in the whole picture is to not have another domestic terrorist attack, but I honestly believe that if God forbid there were one, Obama would seem like a piss ant who does not belong in office. It would remain that way until people get comfortable and take things for granted again. In the days following 9/11, there were not too many liberals in the country. I think people had a major perspective on reality for a little while. A lot of hardcore liberals were calling people I know and saying, "I am so glad George Bush is the president right now and not some Democrat." Then they saw that the attack was isolated and that the government was stopping further ones with a perfect batting average, so people got comfortable and complacent again and got back to the good time anti-establishment fun. A second terrorist attack would snap a high percentage of those people back into reality for good, but I don't want that just to keep a weak foreign policy official out of office. That would go against the whole idea, which is to not have terrorist attacks.
But it is good to know that if we do have another terrorist attack, at least from then on we will be putting effective foreign policy leaders in office. I honestly cannot imagine too many people saying, "Al Qaeda just sarin gassed Disney World and killed 30,000 people! I am so glad Barack Obama is in charge!" (or the same in regard to Hillary Clinton or Al Gore or John Kerry or Dennis Kucinich) I don't see it happening.
I think you have strange beliefs about liberals.Liberals do believe in going to war if there is a reason, just not revenge for a personal vendetta. We believed in Afghanistan, not Iraq.
Do you honestly think that Al Gore would have mismanaged the war as poorly as Bush?

I know. People were still in the reality zone for Afghanistan.
I think he would have just shot missiles at a few weird buildings and dropped the issue, like Clinton used to do. He would be doing what looks good symbolically on the surface, what gives him good immediate approval ratings. True preventative measures at the expense of his immediate popularity is a concept that does not even exist in his brain.
I disagree, but we'll never know. Bush "won".
Responding to the first post. Another attack would incite fear, and that has always been a Bush administration tactic. Fear mongering pretty much defines the Bush administration and people that either don't know about politics or get politics from Fox News or right-wing radio shows buy into it and give them whatever they want. I'll bet that the right will start fear mongering very close to November and saying how Obama will "embolden" the terrorists somehow.

Yes, but it will be realistic. Republicans don't do that with a lot of issues. It is just the areas where they think government can really help. Democrats have the history of saying old and poor people are going to starve, the sky is falling, and they are the only thing stopping the complete reversing of the civil rights movement. Fear strategy is what the Democrats are all about, and they do it dishonestly. At least terrorism is actually a very true threat.
As soon as Bush entered office he started screwing with social security, remember. If it weren't for strong democrat and AARP opposition he would have completely privatized it.
Large numbers of republicans do want to push back civil rights. In fact, in many states that have successfully banned gay marriage and benefit rights.
The democrats may twist the truth, that's politics. Republicans flat out lie: "Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam now has weapons of mass destruction." -Darth VaderDick Cheney

If social security had been private this whole time, it wouldn't be up shit creek right now.
That is not pushing back civil rights. It is just standing in the way of advancing them. They are wrong on it, but they are not pushing back civil rights. Do you know any Republicans in office who are pushing for racially separate water fountains or wanting black people to be forced to sit at the back of buses? Well, there have been Democratic T.V. ads that suggest there are some. Who are they?
That was not a lie. That was a reporting of intelligence from many sources, and it has not been disproven.
Title VII and Title XI both protected rights regardless of sexual orientation. That was the 1960's (although the sexual orientation part was added in the mid 90's. This is late 2000, by definition, they've gone backwards 10+ years.
Oh oh, my favourite red quote:
"These guys are so far on the left that we'll be up to our neck in owls and out of work for every American" - George HW Bush.
Did you know that fixing the climate crisis also eliminates jobs?
If social security had been private this whole time, it wouldn't be up shit creek right now. Most people know way too little about finances to do that. Besides, you can invest in the future for yourself. I have trust funds and investments out there right now, but I have someone who knows about finances handling it for me. It's too complicated and high-risk for people to do it themselves. You'd end up with huge divides between people who struck it rich and people who lost it all.

The Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment supports the right to gay marriage also, but Republicans are too retarded to understand that. However, gay marriage has never been allowed, until recent years. That is not a reversing of equal protection. It is a continuation of the false understanding of equal protection, accompanied by positive change in a few states. The stupidity on it is nothing new. It is as old as the Constitution.
It does in some cases. Telling lumber jacks they can't cut in spotted owl zones and so forth has ended jobs. I am not saying it shouldn't be that way. I am just saying that it is that way.
We could still have people in the government taking care of it. We just need for the accounts not to be government accounts. Government Official Joe could set up and report figures from Citizen Bob's Scottrade or Regions Bank account.

I think all the fear mongering the Republicans have done has resulted in diminishing returns. The fear card is all but tapped out. Look where Giuliani’s campaign went. It went nowhere. That said look for the neo-cons to attack Iran before the election.

I certainly wouldn't be disappointed to not see it happen.
If they do bomb iran, they deserve jail time, immediately

Did you know that the penalty for homosexuality in Iran is death? Imagine what people would be saying about the Bush Administration if they had that policy. And Iran's is not like our death penalty system. They don't kill some tiny percentage of people who commit capital "crimes" and let them play the appeals game for twenty years. If somebody gets caught being gay in Iran, that person gets killed and killed very quickly. The government of Iran kills people for adultery too. I have talked a lot before about their sponsoring of mindless terrorism. Ahmadinejad wants to completely annihilate Israel too. Imagine that government with nukes. I am not saying we should go to war with them at this point in time. I am just saying not to let your sympathy for that government overflow too much.
They've already committed so many war crimes that if they don't go to jail I'll be very surprised.
No, The Bush administration
EDIT: I was referring to Bush, but: both.
Listen UM, I respect you an all but, if anyone attacks Iran, You will see utter chaos. This notion of bombing Iran is totally insane, they won't have the capacity to even have a nuke until 2015 or even later according to the National Intelligence Estimate from the CIA Directly.
So please, scratch your itchy trigger finger, Iran is the last country to bomb, unless you WANT a world war that is.

I did not say I want to go to war with Iran any time soon.
However, they CANNOT have nukes EVER. If it takes a war before 2015 or whenever to stop it, then so be it. Iran can't have nukes. Iran with nukes is 100% out of the question. It can never happen.
What do you think of their gay rights policy?
I think its barbaric, but I don't live in Iran, so I really don't care too much. America cares too much about the affairs of other nations, this country should try sticking its nose in its own business for a change. Our infrastructure has big issues, bridges are collapsing and roads are in poor condition. The economy is in shambles, the economic stimulus was a joke, and people are losing jobs everyday, and yet all you guys are worried about is a potential threat in 15 years, WHAT ABOUT TODAY? what about now?
Why not get our american heads out of our asses and fix our nation, screw the rest of the world, we have issues to deal with at home, we can't afford to be prancing around the world like some kind of global police force while our nation is crumbling.
