i have heard that this passage from genesis is literal, as well as figurative.

If you believe it is literal
      - why does god need arms, legs, and a nose?

If you believe it is figurative
-does this mean god exhibits qualities that humans have, such as anger, love, fear, and a sense of humor?

      the passage puzzles me

Replace image with "mindset or mentality" maybe that will help you to grasp this verse.
"Conflicting mentality's have shattered my perception of reality"

"Any truth I say is a contradiction because this reality is a contradiction." -> SolSkye, because I couldn't have stated it better.

One thing to keep in mind is that image does not necessarily mean exact copy. When someone paints a picture they create an image of something, yet the actual object is not made of paint and canvas.

You need to remember a very important matter, that it was only Adam and Eve that God Created as "Man". and this was in a Spiritual Paradise. This was in what we now would consider an Astral Plane.

We are not talking about the grandiose monkeys that call themselves 'Men' these days.

As soon as Adam was discovered to be flawed in Spirit, he was cast down to earth, and THEN he took on the body of this Glorified Monkey, this Homo Sapien. Notice that the Bible does not pretend that Adam and Eve were the only Homo Sapiens. The Bible freely admits that that there were plenty of 'people' running around and the 'Sons of Adam' mated freely with them, not having much of a choice about it.

What survives of Adam's Heredity from God is the Astral Body and the Tendency toward Spirituality. Notice, again, that not all people share this tendency toward Spirituality. Some entire People's and Nations tend toward Civilization and Religion while other peoples seem to have closely guarded their pure primate heritage and their animal barbarism -- no trace of Godliness in them at all. The best example of this was the German's who even boosted of their Barbarism and thought that it was a positive trait of tribal character that German's throughout History have been able to participate so often in the destruction of Civilization and Religion.

And now a German is Pope.

      How ironic.

I wonder if he has a tail underneath that long skirt he wears.

the bible does say that eve came from adam's rib, and as far as im concerned you need a physical body to have ribs.

Which version of the story are you regarding?

The Jewish Version came along relatively late. A Patriarchal Tribe of Predators from the Hills came swooping down upon a Civilization and along with pillaging all of the golden candlesticks, also pillaged Civilization for their Creation Stories. But to emplasize the Patriarchal Barbarian Superiority of Man, they changed the Primary Character from a Goddess Mother to a man, Adam. Adam suddenly had to be the 'Mother' of the human race. So we had this fabrication of a rib.... a clumsy expedient, as you have been able to point out.
