You can't discuss taste. Some like chocolate, some like vanilla. Unless you like shit (edit) don't (edit) mess with it.

Must have been tired when I wrote this.
Also, it should say dispute, not discuss.
Im sorry, I dont mean to spam the forum. Something i wrote in my last thread made me think.
I said \"I would rather go to hell than be a held-back domesticated dog\" (referring to reasons for atheism). Like a ton of bricks, a thought hit me. I read my comment from a religious persons perspective. I thought how religion could ACTUALLY hold us back. I thought how this comment may just stem from a rebellious attitude. I thought how my comment could be considered worthless and fruitless. Wow.
I soon understood that perspective is the common denominator of most of the problems we have ever seen. Take slavery for example. White people felt they were causing no harm because they held a stance that they were better than blacks. Plainly, they just didnt know any better. The same with Muslims vs. Jews/Christians.
It is extremely revelant to how atheists and religious people communicate. We atheists tend to think we are \"better\" people because we have risen above mythology. On the other had, religious people tend to think they are better because they are faithful to their creator. Conflict will ALWAYS arise when opposites such as these come to conflict.
In short, we all think we are right. This makes your opposer your enemy, due to conflict of beleif/perspective. Beliefs are NOT something that should be screwed with in the human mind. The result is always violence.
Feel free to let this topic die out. I just thought i could get my point across.
The truth is somewhere in the middle

The ego is a dangerous thing to feed…
You're right Hard as Nails, when people become so attached to their beliefs that they identify themselves with those beliefs, they find it extremely hard to let go of them and tolerate other beliefs because they see their existence as a fundamental attack on their own identity, who they are, and they'll do anything to protect that.
Actually, that is a very unscientific approach. You can discuss taste. You can ask yourself why some people have different tastes, what made it such. Upbringing, genes, peer-pressure.
Still, it is just a populair saying, and ok, you shouldn't allways have prejudice about people's taste. However, it isn't immume from logic, science and observation. Same thing with religion, some people it is immume to science. It isn't.
And strawberries > vanilla everyday. : )

Is this something new you are bringing up?
I see myself conflicted with that problem each day. I barely meet people who I feel have enough tolerance for me to speak out what I really think. I live what I think, but I don't bring it up "in public", since I know from the past that this will end up sadly for myself.
I really think people in this world don't even see how intolerant they are.. all they do is spread their word .. not listening, not thinking deeper about their own statements/thoughts.
.. and how come people feel offended when you keep asking them questions and making statements about what they said? It seems they are too afraid to think deeper, wake up from the shine they live in. Am I being intolerant just because I want to know more about their opinion? I don't think so.
People don't finish up their thoughts ...
