Thread: Scientology, Religion Or Cult?

It may appear wherever it wishes, I'm not vulnerable to any advertisements or suggestions of the business-world.

I think it's probably more of a business nowadays. But, back when it first came out, it was cult-like....L.Ron Hubbard was an evil genius for having created a religion. I mean, it was all pretty much a big scam for making money. Anyway, good topic, man.

Then again, if 'Cult' means a certain organised belief that causes bad things and produces mind-sick followers, chistianity and islam are both cults.

Ofcourse I think scientology is more of a big money scam, I mean it literaly means studie of science which has nothing to do with the things these people come up with. I mean pretty much every religion is made so people can have a purpose in life, and thats the bottum line.

The term 'cult' does not necessarily mean something negative, although that is what our society has molded it into.

It's common to attach a negative connotation with the word 'cult.' Personally, I think the term is misused.

Neruo: pedophiles and murderers are mind-sick. An individual who believes in a loving god is not. What an asinine thing to say.

Yes, there are moslims who carry out acts of violence; however, you cannot make a generalization and say that ALL moslims are mind-sick. Most only desire a relationship with God. But, I guess as an atheist, you wouldn't care.

Yes often it is. The term is pretty vague to me at least. But it doesn't matter what the term really means, what is important is that there are alot of religions that lie to people willingly and cause grief, pain and hate. Scientology is one of them, Christianity is one of them, the islam is one of them.

Mind-sick? What really is mind-sick? How can you so devinely say what is mind-sick? Pedophiles might be 'bad' in a way that they hurt children, but all it really is, is the natural instinct that makes men like younger girls, only gone mad. Men are programmed to like fertile girls, that is a fact. Where is the line between 'still normal' and 'mind-sick'. It is all gray area, and in some culture the white area is just moved up to a certain side.

By the way I do not defend pedophilia, they should be protected from themselves and especially their victims.

Mind-sick? What really is mind-sick? Everyone including you can be made a murderer under the right circumstances. If you grow up in a family that is Nazi, big chance you are more then willing to kill a *insert any minority here*. And if that isn't enough, every person would succumb to years of propaganda mixed with direct treat by some random agressive *insert any minority here* attacking you in a group. You can be made into a murderer.

No not all religious people are bad. However religion, like any system that is build on not-having-to-know-the-truth, like facism and communism gone bad, allways leads to some sort of hate, war of discrimination. History proves so.

If you really look at it, Scientology just takes some major principles form Eastern and Western religions, then adds a sci fi twist.

The only reason it gets such massive criticism is because idiots like Tom Cruise start acting crazy and the late night talk show hosts go to town with it.

It's no more or less ridiculous than any 'mainstream' religion.

You say you cannot define the term 'mind-sick,' yet you so willingly strap that label to christians and moslims while re-evaluating the term when i apply it to pedofiles??? No, neruo, how can YOU so divinely say what mind-sick is?

No, not everyone including me can be made into a murderer. There are things called objective moral values; people recognize what is right and what is not.

Wrong. Again, you are making a HUGE generalization. I don't personally know one christian who hates or discriminates against anyone. In fact, forgiveness and love are apart of the doctrine of christianity. Religion leads to hate? I guess that means I hate people and am not even aware of it. That's odd. Yes, religion causes division in the world, but guess what....so do a lot of other things. Ever heard of politics?

Yes, I did leave. I made a statement that I would no longer post on the atheism thread. This is not the atheism thread.


Don't boast about religion being wrong just because you are an atheist. You have no idea if there is a god or not. Also, please stop leaving such offensive comments. If you were in a room discussing philosophy with a bunch of folks you didn't know, would you so boldly say "christians and moslims are mind-sick"??? You wouldn't, so show the same respect here.
