I'd like to add something for discussion: an alternative reading of the destruction of sodom and Gommorah which suggests that the two cities were NOT destroyed because of any "sin" of homosexuality, but rather, for a much more central and fundamental reason.

The sin of Sodom and Gommorah was not homosexuality, but rather, it was the attempt by its citizens to gain "carnal" knowledge of God and his Angels. A SIMILAR reason to Adam and Eve's eating of the Apple from the Tree of Knowledge. The idea that CERTAIN TYPES of "knowledge" are sinful is a theme that runs throughout much of the old testament, and in my opinion, it is this that was the sin in the case of Sodom and gommorah, not homosexuality.

The significance of this, of course, is that if I am right, the use of the tale of Sodom and Gommorah by Christians to denounce homosexuality is wholly inaccurate.

From the outset, I'd like it to be known that I am an atheist. Also, I am working from the New Revised Standard Edition bible, regarded by many as being by far the most accurate and LITERAL translation of the bible to date.

      Now, to begin:

The tale of Sodom and gommorah opens with Lot welcoming two of God's Angels (unnamed) into his house:

The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and bowed with his face to the ground. He said, "Please, my lords, turn aside to your servant's house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you can rise early and go on your way."
      [/b]
This is followed by an account of the me nof sodom coming out of their houses, and demanding that Lot bring out the "men" (actually, as previously described, ANGELS&#33 that are staying with him, so that they may (and this is CRUCIAL&#33 "KNOW" them. NOT "have sex with them", as found in other less accurate translations of the bible.

and they called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, so that we may know them."
      [/b]
As I am given to understand, the word that has been translated into "knowledge, in the original hebrew, refers to some sort of carnal knowledge, and as such, many translations of the bible interpret it as "have sex with". Indeed, it is this interpretation that Lot himself infers, when he offers the men of Sodom his daughters in exchange for the "men" (actually ANGELS) who are staying with him.

But yet, I believe that in this case, the word "know", though it certainly carries with it a sexual inference, has another meaning as well.

I would argue that the sin for which God destroyed Sodom, as described in the Old testament, was not so much homosexuality, but rather an attemt by the men of Sodom to gain "knowledge" of Angels. Indeed, in Christian Mythology, inter-breeding of man and angel is something which occurs a number of times, most notably in the case of the angels who decended to earth and bred with the "Daughters of Man", creating the half-breed Nephilim, as described in Genesis 6:1-4.

Taken in this manner, one could argue that Sodom and Gommorah were destroyed not because of homosexuality, but rather because of human-angel interbreeding...

      Thoughts, anyone?

Intresting post. Funny how there actually are 10000 or more versions of the bibles. No translation can ever truely be accurate. I think the True first bible like composed in constantines time does not even exist anymore.

Back to the point: Ok! Perhaps sodom wasn't destroyed becouse of it's gay inhabitants. That would make the term 'to sodomise' incorrect in a way. To bad another part of the bible clearly disapproves of homosexuality.

In Leviticus 20:13 the Holy Bible commands: “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death.”

Even if older bible translations would say something totally different, christians would still stick to their gay-hating. Christians do not really follow the bible. They follow they ego and preachers.

Sodom and Gammorah didnt exist, just like the tower of babalon didnt. If they did exist we would have found them by now, just like we found Pompei.

The only reason i like the story is because everyone dies (except for like 3 people) and Lot hands his virgin daughters over to be raped. AND thats where we get the word "sodomy" from

That is an interesting interpretation. I'd interpreted it to show their sins were actually their desire to have sex with ANYTHING, regardless of their desire to participate or whatever. I didn't see it as showing homosexuality... as you state, angels aren't exactly sexed... but showing that the people of the cities were ravenous sex-fiends, which was the problem.

I find it strange that I never actually realized that men having sex with angels would NOT be homosexuality. Duh! Angels don't have a sex like humans do.

Either way... it really does tear down the argument that homosexuality between men is bad because of what God did to Sodom and Gemorrah.

As for other Bible passages stating that male homosexuality is wrong, I don't really see how one can take a single passage like that and say it is most certainly how things must be addressed today. There are plenty of passages in the Bible that say a lot of people should be killed, but we don't go around killing them. Not to mention that even if one did take that passage literally, female homosexuality wouldn't be an issue.

Hi Blue Meanie, thanks for taking the time and sharing this passage. In regards to interpreting that the men of Sodom wanted to gain knowledge of Angels, doesn't seem to match with Lot's response.

Gen 19:4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house; 5and they called to Lot, ‘Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, so that we may know them.’ 6Lot went out of the door to the men, shut the door after him, 7and said, ‘I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly8Look, I have two daughters who have not known a man; let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. ; only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.’

The men of Sodom wanting to have sexual relations with the Angels seem to be a better explanation for this exchange.

The human/angel interbreeding purpose is unlikely. For example, the Nephilim were the offspring of angels with women.

Gen 6:1 When people began to multiply on the face of the ground, and daughters were born to them, 2the sons of God saw that they were fair; and they took wives for themselves of all that they chose.

Now, fortunately, there are other scriptures which shed light as to what happened in Sodom and Gomorrah. The chapter before explains those cities were already in grave sin.

Gen 18:20 Then the Lord said, ‘How great is the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how very grave their sin!

2 Peter 2:6 and if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction and made them an example of what is coming to the ungodly

Jude 1:6 And the angels who did not keep their own position, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains in deepest darkness for the judgment of the great Day. 7 Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which, in the same manner as they, indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural lust, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Indeed the sinful nature of the inhabitants was grave; homosexuality was just one of many factors.

Hey, thanks a bunch Genjyo, fantastic post.

On reconsideration, I tend to agree with the last statement you made... the sins of Sodom and Gommorah involved a number of factors. I think you are also right in that homosexuality was one of those factors.

But I still think that it takes somewhat of a back seat to what may be the graver sin of having sexual relations with Angels.

I am also aware that the Nephilim were the result of the sexual relations of Angels with women... the daughters of man.

However, I still think it possible that this case MAY still be an example of attempted human-angel interbreeding. I am not completely sure of the intended gender of angels in the Old Testament, but, if Angels can be considered to be sexually ambiguous beings, perhaps, in Old Testament mythology, it would have been possible for men to successfully breed with angels...

Yeah, I've often thought about that. They are an amazing creation nonetheless.

As far as I can tell, the men from Sodom didn't even know they were angels, but there's always that possiblity.

I think it has more to do with that they were rapists, the fact they were homosexual rapists... well that's irrelevant.

Yeah and as far as Leviticus goes, it also says that can't eat shellfish in Leviticus, and I think it's in leviticus where it states if a man rapes a women he has to marry her and can't divorce her. Any christian drawing to leviticus for quotations is using the wrong subject matter.

And as far as the bible made in Constantine's time not even existing anymore, Constantine and his court picked and chose what aspects to use as well. The most cednsoring and falsification to the Bible was done by Constantine's boys in the first place. Originally it was all oral tradition, but there were a lot of christian sects as well. The gnostics, for instance, were very spiritualist and many theoticians believe the gnostics were the ones that had it right because their beliefs were so close to the beliefs of nearly every extremely spiritual group in every religion. Nearly all of the dogmatic scrolls used by the gnostics were burned. Sects disagreed all the time, and then the scrolls to be used were picked and chosen.

You can see now, with the scroll of Judas popping up in which we see Judas did not betray Jesus, that it was his duty, and that he was Jesus's favorite disciple, how much information was lost. The bible, as it stands today, is simply not the book of God.
