    What makes a religion?

Please do not relate this to any other thread i have made because it has no relevance..

But what actually makes a religion and why do people choose to follow it dedicating there lives to there god.
I personally am not a religious person and i want someone to explain what inspires them to follow there religion.
    What motivates them...

An organisation bound by a doctrine or holy text. Simple.

Why people follow? Because some need the comfort provided by religion... others wish to exploit religion for their own gain... etc.

    The reasons are many...

A religion is simply a form of personal belief that several people happen to share on the nature of the universe. The beliefs are also usually deluded or otherwise based on highly suspect, or even non-existent evidence. They also usually tend to incorporate other supernatural beliefs.

Why do people believe it? I suspect a large part is that they were indoctrinated, given massive correlation between the religion of your parents/in your area. Some also believe it because they find certain aspects more comforting.

    No.

People congregate because they are social animals-- not becauser they are looking for Nirvana and One-ness.

Religion is the context. Communion is aim for 'social animals'?

How can they be looking for Nirvana and One-ness? ....save if only by that you have stated such as being the case

I said they do not know what they seek...

I see a lot of people sounding knowledgable about subjective personal choices that they claim not to have made themselves ('atheism isn't a religion'). I think you should start citing evidence if you are going to make blanket assertions and throw the word 'usually' around so much about the thoughts of people other than yourself.

However, similar behaviour is observed elsewhere... an atheist enjoys congregating in groups for social interaction just as much as the next theist. Because that is human nature.

Also, please PLEASE don't go into the whole "Atheism is a religion" thing... it will start a shitstorm...
