      Why people dislike evangelicals, by an evangelical

      http://www.internetmonk.com/archive/...e-us#more-2915

      Long read but quite interesting, and to me it seems pretty spot on. Here's a couple of quotes.

      I have an atheistic acquaintance who never misses an opportunity to post a news story about a morally compromised minister. Is he just being mean? No; he is pointing out the obvious mess that is the inner life and outward behavior of many evangelicals, truths we like to avoid or explain as “attacks of the enemy.” Our families are broken, our marriages fail and our children are remarkably worldly and messed up. Yet, we boldly tell the world that we have the answer for all their ills! How many churches proclaim that a sojourn with them will fix that marriage and those kids? Do we really have the abundant life down at the church, ready to be dispensed in a five week class?
      We take ourselves far too seriously, and come off as opposed to normal life. Is it such a bid deal that Christians are offended at so many things others consider funny? I’ll admit, it is a small thing, but it is one of the reasons ordinary people don’t like us.

      Honestly...I myself dislike evangelicals. I feel a strong far-right-wing, conservative, close-minded vibe from them. It seems they feel a strong desire to push their political views onto others "in the name of Christianity". ("If you don't believe exactly what I believe, then you're not a "true Christian".) I can't even begin to describe how evil and manipulative that bullshit is.

      But then again, I think most other religions do the exact same thing. Evangelicals are just much more prominent. And I also think that's why so many kids in my generation denounce God, is because they associate him with religion.

      Religion =/= God.
      ...and I really don't care if I never wake up again
      -As far as right and wrong, I know the difference. But right is oh so dull, and no one's interested.
      -Raise up your head, unclasp your hands. Your weakness makes me tremble, True strength comes from within. And we were given this life to live. Not exist by standards set by some bullshit rulebook.

      It's funny to see how even evangelicals themselves realize their own flaws. As I often say - I'm not against religion. Believe in whatever you want. But I'm against organized religion - it leads people into being.. well, evangelicals, scientologists, radical muslins and whatnot.

      Evangelicals say atheists are arrogant, but they are always arrogant in thinking they are superior. Evangelicals say atheists are corrupt, but they are always the ones to do things just so they can go to heaven for it. Evangelicals say atheists are hypocrites, but they are the ones doing the dirty stuff and accusing others. Evangelicals say atheists are disrespectful towards them, but they are the ones always treating people as field to plant, instead of real and reasonable people. In summa, that's why atheists hate evangelicals. We all just have to agree relations between catholics and atheists are much better.

      Saying quantum physics explains cognitive processes is just like saying geology explains jurisprudence.

      I think it just sums up to, everyone has flaws. Just typically it's the religious people who try to say they don't have any, or have much fewer, because they have god in their hearts and he makes them morally better. Which obviously is bullshit. At least most of the time atheists are pretty free in admitting they have faults.

      I don't dislike them but I distrust most of them.
      What I want to know is why so many evangelicals have shows?
      Don't tell me the money is to build the church because seriously, how big of a church do you need? I hear that the money is to help people but I'm skeptical about that. I'm sure some churches do that but I doubt all of the money is going to the people. Some of these ministers dress in really expensive looking suits.

      I don't trust flashy people. Period.
      Doesn't matter the religion. If you're a person of the cloth (which ever it is) you really shouldn't be so flashy. Makes me think of those late night psychics on TV, with their glittery outfits, bejeweled from head-to-toe, huge gemed rings on nearly every finger (really? you need that many rings???) and a crystal ball.
