Thread: Yes, I let the Jehovah's Witnesses in

Quite beneficial. Thanks for sharing. I remember many years ago, a couple of guys from some religion or another came to our house (my dad thought they were FBI because of the way they were dressed. They laughed and said, "No. Even better!") I'm pretty sure they were Christians of some sort. All they did was show us some weird video about Jesus, made us pray (my parents and I just kinda pretended during that one), gave us some pamphlets, and left. The whole situation was really uncomfortable.

Two Mormons knocked on my door one time. I made sure it was the last time. I invited them into my living room to have a seat and talk to me about God. I very politely went all out trying to stump them into one corner after another with relentless asking of the hardest questions I could think of about the existence of God. They ended up saying they had to get going but would get back to me with those answers. Mormon recruiters never showed up at my house again.

JW's also won't receive blood transfusions, and will let people die before giving permission for them to have one.

Hmm i had two Christian preachers knocking on my door in the summer. I was actually in the shower at the time so i was pissed that i had to get out for probably nothing.

So anyway there's one women who must be 7--80years old and one who is in her forties(daughter mb?). I answer the door in my towel pretty bemused. They say " oh we can see this is a bad time.", then around 20 seconds seems to pass in silence. Then they start there preaching.

Before she even got into what she was going to say the Older one asked what my religious beliefs were. I said Atheist, she didn't seem all to surprised but she asked anyway. So i said " Well in my opinion religion is just a tool to control people. You burn anyone who doesn't believe in your exact interpret ation of a book more then 1000 years old. Your God claims to be all loving yet he sends the majority of his children to burn forever with no hope of escape. Just think about how sick that is for a moment. He could just allow those who he deems not worthy of Heaven to end their existence at death but he has to see us scream in pain for eternity. Sounds pretty damn sick doesn't it?"

They were at lose for words for a little, then the younger just dodged my little speech by discussing about how she was Atheist and a scientist before then she saw some kind of personal miracle, she didn't tell me her experience, and that this miracle assured her God existed. So she quit her job and basically goes around doing this now.

I said to her. " How do you it was this Christian God whose miracle you witnessed? It could of been Allah couldn't it? and anyway why did you quit your job? Science is more important then religion im afraid, do you like medicine and all the technological devices you use? Science did that, not your God. Humans achieve amazing things without God, there's no need to thank an invisible man in the sky for everything...."

Then they just said i looked busy and they had to leave and left me some leaflets. I said i'd read em but that she should go and see if she could get her job back as a researcher.


They did sound pretty nice though, tis a shame.

I've always wanted to open the door to them in the nude, never done it though. I just open it with my big dog and tell them it's a shame that they aren't wearing running shoes.

I know first hand to how jehovah witnesses can be, sometimes they come to my door and right before is started school they warned me about science being fake and the bible being the truth or something...

Yea, yea yea. You guys are always moaning about the bad stuff done in the name of religion. And yet you guys hesitate to treat people as decent human beings when they knock at your door, you let your beliefs (on anti-religious beliefs) get in the way. Gee, they might be religious but they are people too. Invite them in for a friendly chat, be nice maintain some decency towards these people who have given their own time to come and talk to you. There not converting you by the sword.

Damned if you do damned if you don't. I am not bound by the sword. So I am suppose to oblige? I too am an ass if I don't let them in to try and convert me the "nice" way, through the door?

MoonBeam. My aunt and uncle are Jehovah witnesses. My incle got into a motorcycle accident and because they would not allow a blood transfusion he nearly died.
Because a part of my family has been a witness for so long that I can harbor so much resentment. I have so many things I could say and so many stories. Absolute evil in my eyes. But not theirs. I truly am in belief that they are loving people. They know not what they do.

Hehe. Firstly, no one talked about being rude to them, unless you count using some logic as rudeness. People don't like religious people going door to door not because of their religion... but simply because most people don't like salesmen of any kind coming to their door! I don't care if it's mormons, girl scouts, people getting me to vote.. Whatever it is, most people don't appreciate it.

Noone has let their "anti-religious belief" [a gross misunderstanding of the members of this forum, by the way] 'get in the way'.


Every example [except ninja.. who I HOPE was joking] listed has simply been asking logical questions to them. NEVER saying "You're worse than me because you're religious" or anything like that; simply questioning the legitimacy of their faith. When they cannot answer because their faith tends to be full of contradictions you assume that it is the challenger being not treating them as "decent human beings"


So questioning illogical beliefs is treating people badly and letting "anti-religious beliefs" get in the way?

I'd like to see just how friendly my neighborhood Christians would be if I went knocking on their doors trying to "convert" them to Atheism. I'm guessing a baseball bat to the head might be a likely outcome.

once a JW approached me on the street when I was coming back from school. He told me if I knew Jesus and (not willing to make it any longer) i said I had a catholic education. He said a few thinsg about christ being good and whatever and gave me this leaflet. I had the best pleasure ever when burning it. It was like, the first thing I burnt in life xDDDDDDDDDDDDDD Not that I wanted to be a rebel or anything, it just came to my mind as a really cool idea - I wasn't to use that paper anyway. I did read it to see what it was about - all the same "Jesus is good and he needs you" banter.

and yeah - what skysaw said makes absolute sense. Some thinsg are always fair for people before they put themselves in others' shoes.

What would you do if guests visit your home? Do you slam the door in their faces? No you treat them with respect, as other decent human beings. Sure they have different, "weird" beliefs as some of you refer to them, but their not converting you by the sword! You don't have to be converted. Tell them, you an atheist straight out ofcourse, but invite them in for a chat, offer them a drink, change the subject from religion if you wish. If they don't like it they can leave. Just don't let religious differences obstruct friendly human relations.

You can see from at least two posts the hostility of which I refer to. But this seems to be a common thing, everything hates Jehovah's witnesses. I'm saying why? What can they really do by preaching to you, nothing per se.

What neighbourhood do you live in? Are we talking about Christians here?





I guess that you guys don't like being converted, thats normal. To promote this opinion I would suggest that you don't convert them back by asking logical questions about their own faith, as this is hypocrisy and retribution. "Tell them I don't like being preached too, I am an atheist", but invite them in, offer them a drink, have a chat about something else; because beyond the veil of their religion is a human being, believe it or not.

You've hit the nail on the head with that one. It's not that religious people knocking on my door pisses me off way more then anyone else. It's just anyone knocking on my door when im in the middle of my shower and making me stand on the doorstep in a towel for 5 minutes trying to sell me crap, even if it's free spiritual crap, pisses me off.

Showing up at a my doorstep uninvited is an intrusion. Whether they are selling firewood or Jesus makes no difference to me. This is the real-life equilvalent of spam.

Do you invite spammers in for a drink and chat? I don't.

It is my belief psychology student that you are merely choosing different variations of situations to just try to have an apposing argument. Otherwise you are fairly nieve.
So I will head your advice as I have already done so in the past on more than one occasion, maybe switch the topics to sports.

That is hilarious, and so true! If you tried to do that in my city, or really pretty much anywhere in the Southeastern United States, you would not make it all the way down a street without being either beaten or shot, and the police would just assume that you were the trouble maker.

You really think that would happen? I know different parts of the nation react more profoundly to some religions or ideals than others.
It just seems that most religious people do not act to that degree. Sadly enough that it possibly just to account for their own actions under god. They may seem indoctrinate to many people but they (Christians) I don't see that the majority Would act that way.

I have noticed that the worse people I know are the born again. They do what they want or have done what they have wanted and just repented. So easy ...I think I will do it again. Under their new belief they falsly give their actions an excuse.

I don't know why personal coments are emerging, about me being naive or contrary.

Yes, I have been visited, Jehovah's witnesses are active where I live, and my best friend from primary school is a Jehovah's witness.

Well, if you show up at somebody's house to sell a vacuum cleaner and just happen to mention that you are an atheist if the subject comes up, most likely nothing would happen to you. They probably wouldn't even be rude. But if you knock on a door and say, "Hello. I am here to convert you to atheism," or, "I am here to teach you about the false nature of the Bible," the reaction is going to be pretty hostile. Before you make it very far down a street, somebody will have made some phone calls. The next thing you know, a group of good ole religious boys would be pulling up in cars and then getting out and surrounding you. One of them would say in a calm voice, "Now look here, son. You need to get your fucking ass out of this neighborhood right about now. Thank you." If you showed any opposition, you would be handled physically. That is the likely scenario that would happen pretty much anywhere around here.

I treat people like decent human beings by not knocking on their doors and bothering them with my beliefs which are MINE and not something I need to sell/push/deal.

This is actually a pretty good description of the JW beliefs. I've only read the OP so far so I don't know if anyone else has answered this, but the devil was cast out of heaven to earth, so this is where he is. As for the 144,000; the JW's believe that many will go to heaven, not that they already have. There are people alive today that (according to the JW's) are among that 144k.
