From my experience you were indeed hallucinating, I think it is called Isolated Sleep Paralysis; where you appear to wake up and you think your eyes are opening towards the ceiling (usually) and you tend to hear/see frightening things. All it is, is a hallucination; I heard that if you are calm during that time you can easily wake yourself up (thats what I do).
I have that problem as well; all you need to do is to get enough sleep and or keep a steady sleep time.
